I am thinking about getting myself a Swift 16 within the next month or two and I was wondering if anyone can recommend a package that is not extremely expensive. I would like to get into some sport flying and I'm not real interested in a 3D setup right now. I already have a Futaba 7C radio that I use for my Hawk Pro. So what would you recommend I get in terms of the motor, esc, battery, charger, gyro, servos, and any other things I might need?

I am not really interested in the RTF version because I would like to build the kit myself. Thanks.

Best Deal...

The Best deal is to find a used one here....

If I were buying new I would look at about 20 other machines first...there are some better options

Yes, Jag? What are better options for the price?

As I see it they are pretty hard to beat.

What Swift have you owned recently?

Maybe that is why there are relatively few offered for sale.

I was thinking that too OF. Not alot of 30 size electrics out there. OUTRAGE, HURRICANE...
For new kit price I don't think you can beat a swift.

I have mine setup with
GY401 / Hyperion tail servo
JR811 cyclic servos
Scorpion 4025 - 740
10s A123 36Volts
CC 85HV Esc GOV
1850 headspeed
5 minutes flight times

Kind of a cheap setup. Doing mild 3D now.

Can't go wrong with the 401 on this bird.
To keep it lighter and inexpensive a Century motor and esc
on 5 or 6 cell lipo will take you very far.
The A123's are kind of heavy and starting to see this since I have
been pushing the heli harder.

It's just not a pretty helicopter and people make fun of you at the field....

My Swift

I am running a Swift 16 with the following setup:

neu 1907/1.5y (12t )pinion
6s 3700mah 30c Packs
Jazz 55 ESC with Heatsink
550mm main blades
85mm tails
hitec hs5625mg servos
401/9254 (soon to be flybarless)

Plenty of pics of it in my Gallery

It's my night flyer

It Flies VERY good no doubt...it even 3d's very well for what it is...

I would say though that the best deal on these helis can be found here in the classifieds...

there was a guy last week selling 2 airframes for Cheap money.

The parts for this heli aren't really all that much cheaper that some other 30 sized helis. so for me it comes down to the cost of the airframes....if I were buying new I would rather spend a few bucks more on the airframe and get a better machine.

Electronics are pretty universal...so they would cost the same for any machine you picked...there are a lot of options in this class...

outrage,logos,trex 600,e550,etc....

there are plenty of deals out there...

Knight 600

these are decent machines from what I heard also...no reason why you couldn't run smaller blades and a lower cell count on this if you wanted a cheap money 30 sized electric also...

Buying a used one is something that I'll have to keep in mind and is probably what I will end up doing. I am still leaning towards the Swift though because I have been pretty happy with my Hawk Pro and I like how inexpensive the parts are.

A few questions about electronics:

In terms of the different motor and battery combinations, how are flight times calculated?

How does Century's 550 motor compare to their 600 and will someone like me who is new to electric helis notice a difference?

Also, would I notice a significant difference between digital and analog or ball bearing and non ball bearing servos?

So the Hawk was your first big heli? Same with me. Still have it. it's my excuse to validate club dues jk.
Oh but when I started flying my Swift,... compared to the Hawk.... JESUS. What a difference.

Don't know much about the century motors... I hear they are good though.
Scorpions are well worth the money. Very efficient motor.

At my skill level now I can tell the difference between analog and digital.
But if you can find some cheap analog's... go for it. They just need to be stronger than servos in a hawk
cause of the CCPM I think. And all matching brands.
I hear great things about the DS20 hyperion servos and they are pretty cheap.

Check out this post I did about figuring out flight times and amp draw. There is some math.
http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/show...&postcount=3087

I ususally do some research and find out what others amp draw is for similar setups. People post data log charts
all the time.

Jag...
I can't believe your gallery. Who are you? heh.

I thought about doing 550's on the Knight but bit the bullet and got some 8s lipos and 600 blades.
But all my electronics will work in the Knight.

That sort of happened to me. The ground helped a little though. The headblock always seems to break right at that spot.
I ended up putting a Raven Century metal head on mine. They say if you want to run 2000 and above head speeds you need
the metal headblock. But that is CRAZY having it break in the air.

Headblock

A good buddy of mine warned me that the stockplastic headblock wouldn't hold up too well with 550's and hard 3d flying

I guess he was right...lol..

it was rather funny to see the head fly off though while inverted at about 40 feet....then the heli just plummeted to the ground perfectly inverted and landed in the mud RIGHT on the mainshaft...so NOTHING else got damaged ...not even the boom or landing gear..

I just swapped the head and mainshaft and was flying it in flybarless form this morning.

I was wondering with all of the different numbers on all of these swift's like 550 and 16 what is the one that Century has in the RTF kit??? I have never owned a swift but have had others like Trex and hirobo and blade, but yesterday I saw the RTF swift for $549.00 and so I got one, should be here on Monday. I am not a 3D or any of that stuff I just like to fly around easy and slow. Also I have a real fear of outdoor flight, I have yet been able to control the odd gust of wind and it has caused me some real trouble, will this swift handle that better???

Sorry I did not mean to hijack this but this thread seemed the right place to ask this.THANKS!!!

Yes the Swift will handle wind very well. It might move around a little in a strong wind but It won't jump up or down 5 to 10 feet in a split second like smaller helicopters.

Swift 16 is the RTF kit and it can handle 515 to 550 mm blades.
The CF version is the Swift 550. Very similar to the Swift 16 but Carbon side frames and I think the ele linkage is different.
It has more CNC and a bit heavier than the Swift 16.

I had a very windy day this WE with my 620SE and I was really surprised of how well it handled. To say how windy it was, the heli nearly fell of the table while I was fiddling around with the LiPo (wood table, and I have rubber skid stops, so it takes some pushing to slide), and my aluminium RX case did fall off.

I didn't really expect to fly much, just circuits and hovering.

In the end, despite the really strong gusts, I managed most of my 2.5D stuff (half flips, rools, inverted hover, ...) even the stuff I'm less confortable with (backwards inverted flight is my current beast).

So for me I consider it handles really well (that said, I consider it's a well equipped machine (blades, servos, paddles, ...))

This may be a dumb question but how do you go about choosing a receiver? I have a Futaba 7c PCM transmitter and I'm wondering what is compatible. Will Futaba receivers only work or can you use a different brand? What about crystals?
