So I'm definitely moving up to a 500 class, but I'm concerned about crash costs between the Trex 500, Protos, and Logo 400. What are the average crash costs for in your experience? Also, I hear the Logo 400 doesn't stack up as well against the protos, and but I'm not sure. The Logo 400 vbar is a lot cheaper than buying a protos vbar, but is the performance difference between the two worth the extra cash for a protos?

seriously, I know this is probably a flame war waiting to happen, which is why I just needed some hard data.

No one can give you useful info about it, as everyone will quote their own crash costs, but the components broken in a crash vary.

So, if I were you, I'd log into Readyheli which has all three and try to create a basket reflecting a normal crash for each of the helis. Blades are the same, so I'd take a boom, main shaft, spindle, main gear, mixing arms, skids and holders, maybe a canopy too and one frame side (bad crash, I know). Then see for yourself. Also compare the prices of complete heads.

Now which one is more durable in a crash, can't really be determined unless there's an obvious weak spot in the design (ie part that breaks regardless of the conditions and on many occurrences). Otherwise it's just a matter of luck.

The Protos will be cheaper than a Trex even if you have to replace the frames. They are only $16 a set. You will also get longer flight times due to the weight difference. If you plan to go Vbar right out of the box I would go with the Logo. It's designed to be flybarless out of the box with no need to get a conversion kit. There aren't many parts to it so crash costs should be inline with the Protos or maybe even a little cheaper. Frames for the Logo are only $10 a side. Personally I've owned all 3 and would put the Trex at the bottom of that list. If I was doing a 500 size Vbar I would probably lean toward the Protos since it would have longer flight times.

Ok, thanks scott. Btw samur, I looked at the prices of common parts before I posted in here. The problem with using those prices as a gauge is that it's tough to determine what parts more commonly break in a crash, which is why I wanted some qualitative data. Yes, the protos is pretty cheap to replace some of the parts, but they're more likely to break if I understand correctly. However, If I have to pay 50 dollars extra to adapt the head, plus the higher initial cost of a protos vs. a logo, then I'd have to crash quite a bit to see the benefit of the decreased cost. I'm personally leaning towards the logo 400 because of the cheaper initial cost. The initial cost of a logo with My flight times might be a little less than a Protos, but most of the parts cost the same, and part count is lower on the logo. Unless someone has had some really bad experiences with the logo, I'm leaning that way...

I think the $$ difference is not that big. If you do not crash all the time, I would not worry about it.
