I usually pre-flight my birds the night before. Then at the field again before the first flight of the day.

In the off season I usually do a thorough once over on each heli.
-clean and lube one-way bearings / thrust bearings
-check for worn balls and links bearings etc.
-check all electronics wiring for chafing.
-If there is excessive play in any part it will get replaced.
-check frames and fasteners
-check head and tail assemblies
-check drive train (head and tail) for wear.

In addition to the above, for the nitro birds I pull the motor, check the clutch / liner and replace as necessary. Replace all fuel tubing / clunk lines.

No need to do a complete rebuild unless dictated by the heli gods due to a prior incident with terra firma.

I'm not very good about keeping my heli's clean so I like to tear them apart during the winter and clean them out. It's amazing the amount of crud build up inside the frame, especially the fan shroud. A bit of dishwasher soap and a tooth brush and everything is clean again. This is usually less work than a fresh build because I'm careful to not disturb the electronics or linkage setup too much which is where a lot of time is.

After about a year and a half when things started to get extremely wore out ( landing skid with little left from slides, thrust bearings, dampeners in very bad shape, and so on..) I've did a nice tune up on the heli, also besides the necessary parts, I surprised the heli with a set of new blades and flybar paddles just to keep her happy

I still need new ball links after that it will be just like new.

So I guess after a more than a year of flying the crap out of it the heli deserves some new parts, I would hate to crash because of a bad part which could have been replaced for $10.00 to prevent a 10 times bigger bill in repair damage.

Fly it like you stole it!!!

My little 450 got rebuilt a few times this year because the ground was too high, and my Raptor got a ground induced full rebuild as well. Otherwise, my end of flight cleaning acts as my inspection, and I replace parts accordingly. I don't like to take things apart unless they show signs of wear. It is unlikely I will do anything to my helicopters this winter except fly the nitro on occasion. I'll probably replace fuel lines and engine bearings in the spring, that sort of thing.

Only when the ground says, 'time to rebuild'!

Couldn't have put it better myself. Of course I do post-flight maintenance and check all "major" bolts prior to flying, but never a purpose strip down.

Same here as well.

Rebuild

I replace servos once a year after contest season is over. Flying 80-120 gallons a year puts a lot of wear and tear on them so replacing them, batteries, and switches is just cheap insurance. While this is going on, I check for worn parts and noisy bearings. I have crashed one Evo in the last three years (it was a doozey) so my rebuilds have been minimal.

Gordie - What do you do with your old servos? Airplane equipment?

I am pretty surprised by this. I figured a lot more would do a tear down and rebuild. Nothing wrong if you don't, it just surprised me.
For me, since I fly in a dusty enviroment, there are areas that just get pretty messy even with after flight cleanups. Plus I rather enjoy doing the rebuild when its too cold and windy to fly. I have never really found too much wrong, but have come across a few issues I might not have noticed with a preflight check.

Walk on water long enough, eventually you will get your feet wet.

Last month, weekly.

If the wings are traveling faster than the fuselage, it's probably a helicopter.

"given that i dont crash, which is often the case for my 90. then once every winter. i just rip it apart, clean it, check things, send the servos in for servicing, and throw it back together again."

Does anyone know what they actually do to check the servo when you send them in? I mean do they vibration test them, and verify its speed, precision and torque? Or do they just plug it in and say "yep it works!"
