The new DX6i arrived today. I figured that the setup would be fairily similar to the DX7 (which will be my permanent radio), so I'm going through the settings, curves and all.

I've dropped everything back to factory settings, and now since I have ability I'm finding myself compelled to re-setup everything..

I'm accustomed to the simplicity of the stock tx, and there's lots of stuff here that I'm not familiar with. The documentation has lots of HOW stuff, but not much WHY/WHEN stuff.

Is there anyone with useful information on how to set throttle/pitch curves for both regular and idle-up so they work at least similar to what I'm used to?

I'm looking here at the sub trims. Is there any reason NOT to use the sub trim settings to fine adjust the servo center position?

Any insights or recommendations?

Thanks,

Michael

See the CCPM videos on this page to get started. Lots of "why" there.

http://www.helifreak.com/showthread.php?t=41692

As for subtrims, in older radios subtrim would alter the center point but not the range of the servos. So you'd get unequal travel on your swash servos at the extremes. Newer radios don't have that issue.

But there are other reasons to mechanically center. In the Dx7 there is a little known feature in the swash menu. Its labelled "EXPO" and though that's kind of what it does, its not the same as EXPO on the aileron or elevator.

What it does is compensate for the non-linear travel of a servo caused by the arc the arm travels. Faster in the center, slower at the ends. The servo arm speed stays the same, but what is seen at the swash includes the travel consumed by the ARC.

Anyway, there's a bug in the Spektrum software such that if much more than 10-15 on the subtrim menu is used, you will end up with uneven travel. As in +11 degrees and -9. So as a rule of thumb I try to use as little as possible. When you are setting up a new heli, find an arm and position that gets you as close to 90 as possible.

Isn't the swash mix supposed to be able to deal with the unequal travel?

My complaint is more with my servos than the radio.. The splines on the servo are too coarse. 90 degress is right between two of them.. Subtrim is somewhere from 30-50'ish..

May not be a good thing..

Swash mix adjusts the range for both ends at the same time. You can compensate for the software bug in the pitch curves. But I'd rather not.

For the servos what you have to do is spin the servo wheels around trying all the available holes until you find one that lines closer to 90. You should be able to get to 0-15 on the subtrim using that method.

To "spin the servo wheels" I'm assuming this means pulling the servo's apart?

By spinning. I meant the servo arm/wheel. You leave the servo mounted. Remove the center screw, as well as the links. Then pull the servo arm off and rotate it on the shaft. This only works if you have more than one orientation that will work with the arm. Most servos come with a 4 armed or 6 armed option. With a 6 armed servo wheel, you have alot of options. With a 4 armed option you have less options but still enough to work with. If you have a two arms then you have only two options to play with.

Well.. Unfortunately, these only have 1 arm and one orientation possible. Maybe it's time for new servos and a direct to swash mod - or just put up with the slightly out of 90 on the servos..

I've heard rumors that it's possible to open the servo and play with the gear rotation and get things a LITTLE closer, but haven't gone that far.

The Belt uses a push/pull arrangement for the servo to swash link. That means the servo arm has 2 two arms (one on either side of the servo center). You can rotate the arm 180 degrees.

Yes, you can take the servo apart and get it closer by altering the position of the gear that sits on the pot. If this is the setup (servos and linkage) you are going to stick with, and you want to use swash mix EXPO, then it might be worth the trouble. But if you will be swapping out the servos or altering the linkage soon, it might be better not to invest the time now. For now you can skip EXPO on the swash mix.
