Well as many of you know I thought I was chasing another gyro
problem. The first time this happened I went down the same damn path.
The REAL problem was the pin that goes through the tail rotor shaft.
The first time it somehow worked its way up and then started stripping out the plastic pulley. It was causing the tail blades to not have enough bite in the air. They were just spinning but not insync with the main blades. ALmost like a slipping clutch.
So I order up some new parts repair it and get ready to fly. This time
it APPEARS the rotors are spinning with the main blades but AGAIN the pin had worked its way up and was spinning like a slipping clutch.
I never thought this would or could happen again. But I took it over to my mentors house and he found the problem AGAIN!! This whole time I thought it was the gyro. So since the stripping of plastic was just beginning I was able to use the plastic piece still. I hand made a pin that fits the slot. The pin I got from Protos is about 25 % shorter that the slot it fits in. I dont know if this is part of the problem. But the larger pin should reduce the chance of this happening again. I pushed the new pin down in the slot then I applied just a touch of CA to keep it in there. I made sure I followed the build sheet the first time I put the tail together and I did again this time. It calls for two shims on either side but I wonder if the shims opposite the pin arent thick enough to press the pulley on the other side keeping the pin in place.

Since this happened twice really aggregating me I thought I would share since this might happen to you. As an engineer I dont like the design.

The design is now fine. I was an issue last year. Do a search on the updated tail pulley on this and other forums for details.

This is what you tail pulley should look like. If your cross pin is shorter, it should be replaced with the proper one.

I fly out of taller grass. and the pin was enlarging the groove for it. So I starts to expoxy the pin to the gear. Very light amount. This prevented the pin from working loose and damaging the gear and, with a little force, allowed me to remove the pion when needed.

Or you could get the metal gear upgrade over at infinity hobbies.
