When did this become popular protocol?

I understand the reason, but have just recently seen this request in ads.

It is a way to get around the fees. Paypal will figure this out and change it.
The risk is that if you send money as a gift when it is really for a sale, you will have no recourse if the transaction goes bad.

The send it as a gift is stupit, good way to get ripped off in a hurry and nothing you can do about it.If you get a bad part your SCREWED cause you can't make a claim.IMO the only thing its good for is if you send money to a family member in another state.

Actaully, sending Paypal as gift still requires fee if you are using credit card to fund the transcation. Except the fee is now paid by the sender.

My understanding is if it comes from your checking account as a gift then there are no fees.

I have done it this way to my local hobby shop.

Would not do this for any buys on here because I don't think it would be covered as it states it's a gift.
Exactly what some thieves would love for someone to send it as.
In this case I would gladly take the 3% hit.

Agreed. If they are so worried (or cheap!) about paying the fees that they want you to send money as a "gift", then I am not so sure I want to partake in that deal in the first place.

I think that if you quote a price for an item in a Classified, quote it to include shipping and the whopping 3% PayPal gets. So your item goes from $60 to $65 - big deal.

LOL...yup i though the same things when i saw this in the classified last week...

i agree ....Even $100 sale is what $103 let paypal make a buck at least when you get burned and cannot fly you have something to do to occupy your flightless time...file a paypal claim...even though it might be fruitless if the money is gone but just filing a fruitless claim is still better than nothing and MIGHT make you feel just a TAD BIT better

I WOULDN'T DO IT FOR A LOUSE FEW BUCKS...

I am surprised noone ever uses an ESCROW service like escrow.com...i used them one time for a very high ticket item and all went smoothly..i might have to try it the next time a buy something thats $500 or higher since iam seeing so many ppl get ripped off here!

AND BTW Sorry to anyone that gets BURNED! Remember PEOPLE change when it involves ANY money...could be the nicest guy in the world but when it comes to bucks he will be a DI*K about it! Always happens!!

Send as Gift instead of Goods

When you PayPal as a "Gift" the PayPal fee comes from the Seller instead of the buyer. So if you PayPal $100 as a gift then your cc or bank account gets charged $103.20. If you select "Goods" the buyer pays the fee (he only receives $96.80) and your cc or bank account gets charged the actual payment only; $100. SOMEBODY has to pay PayPal for them to do business.

So, if you are interested in buying something that the seller says pay as "Gift" then you need to add the PayPal fee to what he is asking and decide if it is worth the extra money.

From the PayPal help page:

Quote
Sending money – Personal payments:

It's free within the U.S. to send money to family and friends when you use your PayPal balance or bank account and you send the money through the PayPal website.

There is a fee to send money as a personal payment using a debit card or credit card. The fee in the U.S. is 2.9% plus $0.30 USD of the amount you send. For example, if you send $100.00 USD by credit card, the fee would be $3.20 USD ($2.90 + $0.30). For personal payments, the sender can pay the fee or pass it on to the recipient.

Receiving money – Personal payments:

It's free to receive money from friends or family in the U.S. when they send the money from the PayPal website using their PayPal balance or their bank account.

If you receive a personal payment made from a debit card or credit card, the sender has the option to pay the fee or pass it on to you.

If the fee is passed to you, it is 2.9% plus $0.30 USD of the amount you receive. For example, if you are sent $100.00 USD by credit card, the fee would be $3.20 USD ($2.90 + $0.30).

There is a fee if you click Request Money on the PayPal website and request money from friends and family.

Goods and services – Purchase payments:

There’s no fee to use PayPal to purchase goods or services. However, if you receive money for goods or services (such as from selling an item on eBay), the fee for each transaction is 2.9% plus $0.30 USD of the amount you receive.

Hope this helps.

This hobby is WAY too expensive!!

I agree. and have passed up a few ads because of that.. Kinda scares you off.. I also don't fully agree with the "buyer add for fees" either. Here's my take on paypal:

The buyer benefits from being able to make an immediate payment to the seller, expediting the transaction and getting his purchase sooner. THe seller benefits as well, by getting his payment immediately and not having to wait for it in the mail.. And with that comes the fact that the funds are immediately available to purchase something else; and is often spent before the item sold has even left the door. So its a win/win.. We should be splitting the fees..
