What determines swashplate height?

The elevator A arm determines height in its middle position...

When lining up servos at mid stick, the arms of the servo and bellcranks must be at 90 degs..To make this easy, use a straight wire, and position it on the center axis of each control.. Then judge the arms to 90 degs to this line between centers of axis..Leave your radio on RX in hold is fine, till you finish all servos..

rotate servo arms to get the 90 degs without using to much subtrim. No subtrim is preferred. Futaba arms work good and are numbered...

If you use the supplied piggy back arms which allows true 1:1, just use a round servo wheel, and bolt them on to wheel.. All arms 90 degs between axis still applies..

After you get the swashplate level, work up to the head setting the pitch at 0 pitch with the bellmixers level.. The washout arms should be level...+11 - 11 if you use the 1:1 arms, and then when you get to the pitch curve you can set them back to 10 degs...

Bill,

How do you like the overall flight performance of this gasser? Usually they are a bit more docile than their nitro counterparts.

pinion gears

Hello Billme
Do you know if century or heli-world sell the 14 tooth pinion gear and will the stock 14 tooth fit the HD version.. I am thinking by looking that they would be interchangable. It is to late to call century.

Also you mentioned only using only one big shim and one small one,,,are you refering to page 8 numbers 14(large) 15(small) and using only 1 of the 3 suggested.

build is going well..

Hootowl,

Overall, I think even though this is a smaller engine, the power to weight is better compared to being Docile of the larger machines.
If you are expecting YS 55 performance, you need to reassess what you want to do. A gasser is just different..
Flying a 15 lb gasser and going to this machine, you might think you got a hold of a YS, hehe

The CG is higher with this model and that helps on everything

It grunts just like a 90, and it pulls very good as in the video..
I'm testing lower gears that will be available so that even in the corners the engine can load better even when the pilot is not good at pitch management..Its a goal of mine...

The engine has more power than most people thought, hence only 2 manufactures jumped in..Even when I saw the engine burning up in the conversions, I knew it had potential...I also knew it could turn more RPM's...out of the box, it wants to run...So far, I have not seen a bad one..they all crank easy, and idle great since the timing is retarded electronically to about 5 degs..

620s is where its design to start at or bigger, but you could do 600's at very high rpm, and do some interesting stuff I would think. The tinkerers will love fooling with this machine trying different stuff..
With the cg higher it tracks better than I thought it would... The pilot can add weight to flybar, or use heavier paddles to suit his or her style...
My main concern was having good cooling, and a good drive train..It passes the test so far.. I grin every time I hear the grunt...

This engine is better built than the bigger 231, and 26 to me...So far it just runs good and consistent...That is what I have always wanted... As long as it does that, I will be happy...
Its a pleasant change for gassers, and I think its going to be surprising to most, but the convenience will be priceless...

13tooth not available yet but soon...

Bec, Yes page 8 is what I was referring to...Running 620s, I just don't think you will need all of them Remember this head was on the Predator using blades all the way up to 810s with these blade holders..

Clutchbell

Inside the clutch bell is the guide bearing...You need to flush this bearing to keep grease off the clutch..I sprayed carb cleaner in mine before putting the pinion on. Sprayed it from the top plus you clean the threads.

If your already flying, when you breakin your engine, take the frame off, its easy, and clean the clutch, no need to flush, but take some sandpaper, and get the grease off the clutch liner...

Also, I add a little medium ca at the bottom of the clutch where the liner and metal meets to insure it holds.. Sometimes they don't use enough glue, and this helps.. Do not get it on the liner where the clutch shoe meets the liner if possable. Go all the way around. I put a little on, and rub it around the edge...If a little bit gets on the liner where the shoe meets, don't panic. Just try to keep from doing it..

Hands down, this machine will be the easiest heli you have ever had for quick maintenance...

Bill

Note: I will be going back editing a lot of my post, so go over it all ever now and then, I may have added some new material..

Good stuff Bill! Hey, just as a quick reminder, I use an inexpensive laser level to line up all the mechanical geometry in my gassers. It works really well and I've never had to re-adjust anything at the field. Check the following link and scroll down about half-way through the page for details:

Yes, I remember that article my friend..Very good indeed Nevertheless, its important to setup as accurately as possible with this new machine, or any machine for that matter...
I still can't get over the fact you don't line up the hub fan, and just screw on the clutch...

Box full fun

Is it possible for one to slip by unbalanced or are they all tested at the factory? It would be interesting if some builders dialled the fan in anyway just to see how accurate they are.

I only like to fly gassed up

Hello Bulldog

Iam looking at using the rotor tech 620's ($110us) as that appears to be what has been run so far. Not many flyers yet so I imagine there will alot of info on the blades size/type soon...I have looked at the mavrikk 620's ($72us) but do not know enough about that brand.
I am going to use the align 610 on cyclic and 650 on tail with spartan gyro. unless i strip down one of my other helis..

I do not know if Century USA has yet twigged to this, but there is TWO big differences between the blade grips on the HD (Predator) head and those on the LT Radikal and 50NX, which related directly to the relative size of the blades that each were initially designed for.

The blade grip spacing on the HD (Predator) grips were designed for 690mm to 820mm blades that use 5mm blade bolts. The LT (Raven) grips were designed for the use of 600mm to 620mm blades that generally use 4mm blade bolts.

So, if you are using the HD head, be sure whatever blades you get can accommodate 5mm blade bolts.

Next is the difference in blade grip spacing. The HD head has a 17mm blade grip spacing to accommodate some of the larger blades that may have 16mm blade roots. On the other hand, the LT grips have the standard 14mm grip spacing that is the standard blade root thickness of 600mm to 620mm blades.

So when using 600 to 620mm blades with the LT grips, both the 4mm blade bolts and the 14mm blade roots that are standard with these sizes of blades, will work out fine.

The problem with the HD grips with these size of blades, is that you will need 2 x 1.5mm spacers on each grip to insure proper fitment, and you will also have to be sure that your blades can be used with the larger 5mm blade bolts, or use a 4mmID x 5mmOD bushing in the grip for use with an appropriately long 4MM blade bolt.

I would expect that Century will provide these spacers in future kits with the HD head and maybe some bushings and longer 4mm bolts, or something else, to allow the grips to use 4mm blade bolts, for use with all the different blades available in this size.

For now, any Canadian hobby shops that purchase the Radikals with the HD head, will have these items included by Leisure-Tech Products

hd blade parts

Hello Oldfart
Will your canadian stores (pivotal) sell these added parts (spacers/washers/bolts etc) as an extra for people who have bought the kit elsewere. I had discussed this heli with you a while back and at that time the HD appeared the way to go and you were not sure of carring this heli in HD,,,not so sure now that I made the best choice,,,lesson learned,,I like things simple. But if we can pick up the needed parts to make the 620 blades work that would be great....I still need the blades and muffler which I will go to Shelly (pivatol)for, so is it possible for the parts to be added into the blade package. I may just simplify everything and order a LT version also...

so you bought the HD ver but now find it easier to order a LT ver instead the spacers.
