I used to use glo-wire but have now switched to LEDs (Xerogear). The LED is wayyyyy brighter and not hard to set up at all.

Xerogear is undoubtedly brighter than glowire. It's also simpler to setup, as it requires no drivers.

Glowire is cheaper and easier to trace around a canopy outline. Orientation is much better in my opinion when the canopy is outlined.

Glow WIre

I haven't tried the led's yet...but I saw them in action at IRCHA and they are VERY bright....but the High Brightness Glow wire I use in conjunction with the F2 drivers and a small 3s lipo ...well....it is plenty bright enough for me...If I didn't have the glow wire I would probably buy the LED xerogear setup myself.

here's what mine looks like ...

LED's will also cost you at least 2X what DIY glow wire will run.

Thanks beeflyer2, got em.

I have a 600e setup using the align glowire and drivers, of which is cool, but if i plug 2 wires in the align drivers, the brightness almost halves. im carrying 4 wires, and didnt really want to use 4 drivers.

The led's look good, but i wouldnt use them on the canopy.

Cant win

I haven't used the F2 drivers or high brightness wire Jag has, but the standard wire and RC drivers from glowire.com are pretty much the same as Align night gear.

If you are having trouble with brightness, try an different color. IMO, orange and blue are pretty weak. White and green are much better.

Drivers...

I found that by putting a driver on each string of wire you get about 50% MORE brightness...

Also...you need to ask for the high brightness wire specifically...as I don't think they list it on the site..that can be purchased by the foot I think also..so you can buy longer or shorter strings.

The KEY element to finding a good driver is to look at the HZ output...the regular drivers they sell only put out about 2000hz of power...the F2 driver puts out 4000hz ...so it's considerably brighter.

I used to run 2 strings per driver but found it better to run a driver on each string...I just run 2 batteries for all of them...I use 3s 300mah packs..

like this...the little black pack on the bottom right is the 3s 300mah..

Drivers...

This is from the glow wire site

Quote
GLOWIRE consumes very little draw on the battery. A 30 foot section of GLOWIRE at 2000hz draws less than 200 mA.
Brightness is directly related to the hz level. The higher the hz, the brighter the glow and inversely, the lower the hz, the dimmer the glow. The brightness also affects the life of the wire. GLOWIRE powered at 4000hz will retain brightness for approximately 1600 hours while 400hz power will last over 5600 hours. Although the wire never does actually burn out, it does become dimmer.

High brightness GLOWIRE has also been introduced recently. It is about 50% brighter than regular GLOWIRE with similar life. The wire is 2.5mm and is more sturdy than regular GLOWIRE - it holds it's shape more easily.

Hey Jag , cool swift dude

I use Wire on helis, and leds for planks.

Agree with all the power related stuff in the above posts. Worth remembering, that light rope dosent have to be super bright, to be easily seen on a dark night....even in dusk. I use the cheap Align stuff, for the choppers, as its very easy to get, but alas, about 1 in 10 pieces(rope/driver), wont work properly, due to QC.... but its pretty cheap, to get the ball rolling. I run 2 1meter wires , per Align driver, and they are well bright enough for me

I CA mine to the heli, as i have a lot of trouble with the more elaborate setups( 7+ wires) with cable ties, collapsing the two layers of wire together, and arcing out. This will start as a dimming, and a flicker, then it will fail. This will stop the driver, and other wire on the driver working, and must be removed quickly, or it will kill the driver, and the good wire.

My 700 night rig has 7 wires, and MS 710`s, and MS 105`s.....looks great at night

Kevin Einsteins awsome night rig with 9 wires

For the planks, we use 4V Leds, mounted on carbon strips, at the extremeties of the wingtips, and tail, angled down to light the surface of the plane. These are powered by 1 cell, like 1000 mah.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-jhIXB33Cw

This video doesnt do it justice, as its taken on a n95 cell fone, and the camera adjusts for the bright point light sources, but in the sky, it looks unreal

Assumption is the mother of all F#@&ups.....

That glow wire sure looks good. I'm wondering if I went with the wrong thing with the leds. My backup night flying 450 should be here in the next couple of days. I'll rig it up for night flight shortly after I get it flying well during the day and will post some pics.

Just got the LED strips in from hobby city. Wow!!! These things are bright!!! (blue/yellow). I have a 350mah 3 cell batt with lumifly splitter to power yellow tail boom and blue canopy. Actually its a clear canopy so I may face the blue towards the frame and see if it lights up the inside better than shining the lights outside. Those blues are bright!!!
I'll post pics when I get em on the heli.

LED are the best IMHO

+1 on the led's . I had the glow wire before and switched over to the led's they are much brighter. Plus I think they are more reliable than the glow wire. I had a set of the glow wire go out before I could get out of a hover.

Dunno, i think a double run of glowire helps define the canopy outline.

MAYBE A LITTLE OF BOTH!. led's on skids boom etc, glow wire on canopy.

Theres some redundancy in there as well, if something goes '****' up.
