Just replaced my clutch with part number HN6028. Same liner as before. The old clutch worked great for quite a few flights before it broke. Problem is the new clutch is really stiff compared to old clutch and I have to make some serious revs before it even starts to engage. I can't see how this can possibly work. Anyone had an issue with this part ? Didn't find anything with a search.

Thanks

New 600LE

My new 600LE came with a little larger gap between the shoe and the bell. What i do is take the liner off, cut a strip of aluminum soda can and epoxy it to the bell, when it dries, then i glue the clutch liner and the gap is about right. If its a little tight dont worry because after a few spool ups, it will grind itself down to the exact gap.

Perhaps your clutch broke because your liner is either worn and the gap is too big or defective and the gap is too big. either way, I would fix it or your new clutch won't last long.

Thanks for the replies guys. My liner is pretty much new so if it is too loose then that is the way it came. I believe that tightening up the gap is the only way to fix this. The soda can trick is certainly doable. Is the Rappy 90 liner thicker that the stock liner ? if so that might be the easiest solution.

Measure the clutch and measure the bell inner diameter. It's the only way to know what your gap is. If it's more that .012 then it's too much and you'll break another clutch. Set your gap by gluing the liner in using the clutch wrapped in electrical tape as a guide. Gap should be good then.

Yes it is, but you should measure the gap as jschenck says. Align has different diameter clutches out there as a fix for their clutch to bell gap, so you really need to measure to see what you've got. Gap of .012" (difference of diameter between clutch and liner in bell of .024" is good as jschenck said.

OK on the 12 thou clearance. I'll check that and correct accordingly.

Thanks again

Hi,

I have the same issue with a brand new 600 LE

The Shoe is 41.4mm and the Bell Liner is 42.3mm

I need to get up past 1/4 stick before the clutch engages

I think I need to install a new liner

3D?? No - just another input error!!!

I just built a new 600. The clutch liner has way too much clearance. It should be no more than 0.010" per side. I put some of that Garlock 10 stuff in it and bored to 0.0075" per side. But it's still winter.

I have replaced the clutch liners in both my 600's and 700 with the Raptor 90 liner, no more problems.

Cheers

yep, just replaced the liner in my 700 with a Raptor-90 liner. The gap is a much better .25mm vs. the original .5mm (way too big)

BUT - the Raptor liner is about 5mm too short! I ended up cutting a chunk off the 2nd liner that came in the pack to make up for the gap. Also way too wide but that's not a big deal to trim off the excess once it's set in the bell. I used two wraps of black electrical tape on the clutch to set the gap. Very happy with the results. Haven't flown it yet.
