My Posts This: Topic Forum | Police Car Repossessed JERICHO, AR - No money, no police cruiser, and now, now evidence. Investigators say one of the squad cars was repossessed with drugs and ammunition inside the car. Drugs and ammo, the town’s top cop says was evidence in an upcoming court case.
What started as a meal inside a West Memphis “Waffle House,” ended with the Jericho Police Chief and Assistant Chief in search of a ride. Their cruiser was repossessed because the department was behind on its payment. It’s a case that has the West Memphis Police Department is looking into. “I have never seen a police car repossessed. One of the more interesting reports we’ve had in a while,” says Captain Donald Oakes. It turns out the wrong cruiser was repossessed. Oakes says once the incorrectly repossessed cruiser was returned investigators say several items were missing including 15 bags of marijuana and several boxes of ammunition. “That were in the trunk of the car, apparently evidence from some case. I know we don’t put evidence in the trunk of our police cars, unless it’s to transport from point “A” to our evidence locker. We have to find out where it is now because now it’s on the street somewhere, so it’s a very significant problem.”
A significant problem no one in Jericho wants to talk about including the mayor and the officers involved. “We are still waiting on a captain for the Jericho Police Department to contact us to get us more details,” Oakes tells myEyewitnessNews.com. “We don’t have any way of knowing who’s had access to the car at this point.” Which means the drugs and ammunition could be anywhere in the Mid-South; drugs and ammunition that may be used to commit more crimes, and evidence that may no longer hold up in court. Oakes says most law enforcement agencies have strict policies when it comes to transporting evidence. “Most evidence you want to get out of your hands as quickly as possible, because when you collect it from a scene, the less time between when you collect it and the time you put it in an evidence vault, it makes the evidence much stronger.” Investigators tell myEyewitnessNews.com Jericho Police Chief William Frazier and Assistant Chief Roy Hill will likely not face any charges in this case.
In September, 2009, the Crittenden County Sheriff’s Department recommended the State Commission on Law Enforcement Standards look into the practices of the Jericho Police Department. That was after a Jericho Police officer shot the town’s fire chief at city hall. The fire chief has since recovered, but he was charged in the incident and fired. No word yet on where Crittenden County officials are in that investigation.
