Gasser Model RC Helicopters > What upgrades are possible for an MA 1005?

I have an MA 1005 with some metal upgrades to plastic parts, but otherwise stock controls.

It looks like CCPM is possible (I see some in galleries [Dr. F] and have done a RR search), but does anyone have details about setup and parts? (especially for the elevator connection to the rear)

Can the Tempest head be used with the CCPM (why not, right?)?

Can the Tempest head be setup FBL?

Is there an issue with the original tail case that should be upgraded or is there an "SE" upgrade 'package' (i.e. something from MA directly)?

Remember details, details, please.

Thanks in advance.

>>It looks like CCPM is possible (I see some in galleries [Dr. F] and have done a RR search), but does anyone have details about setup and parts? (especially for the elevator connection to the rear)<<

The simplest is to do a two servo eCCPM. Make a new servo tray and mount the aileron and collective servos side by side. One servo with one linkage to one bell crank. So you have one servo controlling one side and the other controlling the other side. Mix the two servos to go up and down together and you have collective. Leave the elevator as is so the elevator yoke will move up and down with the swash.

>>Can the Tempest head be used with the CCPM (why not, right?)?<<

Yes. You can basically use any 10 mm head that is strong enough. Like I wouldn't use a Raptor 30 head even though it will fit.

>>Can the Tempest head be setup FBL?<<
Sure just take off the mixer arms and the washout unit. However you have to figure out a way to put an anti rotating unit in there.

>>Is there an issue with the original tail case that should be upgraded or is there an "SE" upgrade 'package' (i.e. something from MA <<

There are lots of tail units that you can get from MA. Browse around part by part on the HeliProz website under Miniature Aircraft parts. It is like a kid walking in a candy store.

hmm

Dave,

There is some things you can do to make the control system come alive. I did a conversion through helidog. I upgraded the balls to maximize throws and response and put metal bellcranks on to minimize slop since the 95 vpaddles are toughy in FFF. Any unwanted slop is very bad with this bird. You can pm me with any additional questions. I have to look but on my jump drive I do have the prints. I have not looked in a long time but in the format the frame was drawn in, but it might be pretty easy for a frame set to be cut.

helidog was impressed with the throws that can be put in the heli in flight. It wakes up the cyclic a lot.

Back at you Doc.

From an old post by helidog:
[How many gasser flyers would be interested in upgrading your X-Cell gasser to CCPM + ?
This kit would include all tech drawings, updated carbon fiber upper and lower side frames, under belly frame stiffener and carbon fiber servo tray, fuel tank and radio equipment mounting. ...
You would have to supply the rest of the parts on your own to finish the upgrade. ALL PART ARE MIN AIR to finish the upgrade.
You would use about 90% of your existing equipment.
]

Also, the gallery shots by Pullin' Pitch of this 'kit' are gorgeous.
Is this (helidog kit) the way you went Doc?

Looks like helidog is not too active recently and I would guess that chasing down these parts for this old of a bird is going to be a lot of effort.

My old 1005 also has old electronics (72 MHz + analog servos) so I am looking at updating all this as well, so:

Would I just be better off to get a Spectra G (or similar new bird?, i.e., Pred or Rad ... usual suspects) to go with new electronics? Thoughts?

If anyone starts making this frameset again please let me know, I'd be interested. I did the conversion using aluminum sheet but CNC carbon would be nice. I also like the modified upper and lower frame design better than the stock.

That totally depends on what you plan on doing with the 1005 and what you have already done. What engine do you have in your 1005 and what upgrades have you done?

I looked through my hard drive and my back up. I don't have it. Could have been erased after a virus 3 years ago. I called helidog and asked him if he could get back to me on the file. Otherwise as a winter project maybe I could send the frame parts out for someone who can auto cad. Its not that hard of a conversion. The radio tray is the only part that has the largest changes.

I've already done the conversion in aluminum without CAD. I was interested in looking at the other mods he made to the upper and lower frames. I definitely like the additional support at the rear. Thanks for checking Cody.

For the flybarless Tempest head, all you do is take out the washout base and replace it with a Mikado 10mm swash driver, then connect the long mixer arms from the swash to the blade grips. It is a very easy conversion

Many Thanks

Thanks Cody for looking through the files. Since the HeliDog kit had so many changes, I think I will not hold my breath on this one unless kits magically appear. This is alright because my option is a new bird or do the best I can with upgrade electronics in the 1005.

Thanks jrockstuart for the description of the FBL approach. Will research this approach. Did you do this and do you have any pics?
-Any input on how to get a Wally motor?

Thanks bwrkent for the input and suggestions. Not sure I want to take on the effort of CCPM myself on such and old bird when the new ones are probably much better over all. This especially so since seeing all that was involved in frame changes to get 120 deg. CCPM (which is what was wanted).

Think I will look into an inexpensive set of servos and 2.5 Gig receiver and "make do" with the Hanson modified 23 and quiet pipe. This may be an enjoyable knock around ship.

Something to be said for just flying it! If you look at the costs of paying an online machine shop a single run for the carbon parts it probably wouldn't be worth it. Also keep in mind that with our economy, loaded used gassers are selling for a lot less than they used to on Runryder.

yea

I completlly agree with bwarkent. This beeing said I would never charge anything for the plans I am trying to get from Rodney. It would be a cost of cnc or maybe water jet. I know of a couple guys through work that if not themself could get it done cheaper than going to your local cnc shop.

Also the radio tray is the only thing frame wise that ever breaks. Its beffier Carbon and tight weave. Good stuff.

I dont know what you expect from the 1005 but a 1005 was my first gasser. I went through the old gal and set her up with good servos and made sure everything was in top notch order. It has the plastic grips and metal head and when setup right flies like a dream.
It flies so well I kept her basically stock and bought a Spectra kit to see how she does.
Although an older design if the 1005 is in top shape with a good Hanson or Toxic motor I think you will be pleasantly surprised how well the 1005 can fly.

Setup is everything, All my heli's can fly better than I can pilot them
