| What's up with a second motor/ESC/battery to run the tail rotor? Seems like an interesting idea.

one. technically more power available to the main rotor...although your now carrying more weight.
two. during an auto, all energy from the auto is going to the main rotor again, therefore you can have super long autos.
three. the tail rotor is maintaining a constant rpm no matter what you do. if your doing 3D and you bog the head with high loads, not only do you need more power available to the tail, but your also dropping rpm, therefore you have less power available when you need more....therefore your tail blows out. but with an independent driven tail, this will not happen. you can bog the head all you want, but the tail will still have all the power it needs to hold.
as far as i know though, this isn't (currently) allowed with F3C competitions mainly because of the advantage in auto's.
