At 61 I need all the help I can get:

1) renew eye prescription regularly;

2) fly on clear bright days;

3) use fluorescent orange on canopy and tailboom.

I was told lasik was not a good option for me.

Hoot,
Most lasik places have a free consultation, and exam It won't hurt to go and see what they have to say. How close to Pittsburgh are you? I had mine done at the Lasik Institute of Pittsburgh.

A couple random thoughts from an over 60 far sighted presbyopic flyer....

I used drug store readers for a while, but when my presbyopia got bad enough that even distance objects were less than optimal, I went and got my first pair of glasses. I got blended lenses that also corrected a bit of astigmatism. And the process was unbelievably fouled up. It took them three tries to get it right. But when they finally did, they worked great for years.

About 8 years later my prescription had changed just enough (and the glasses were pitted enough) that I decided to replace them. Same experience. The first try was far worse than my old glasses. The second try was better but still not right. After I educated myself re: optics and lenses and could toss out some intelligently chosen buzz words, they finally listened to me and re-made them and they were acceptable.

Bottom line.... if you get glasses, don't settle for less than at least 20:20 vision (get re-checked with your glasses on) unless the optical shop can give you a valid reason you can't be fully corrected. They love to tell you vague things like "you'll get used to it" and the like. Hogwash!

I have also found that my current pair are good straight ahead but the correction is worse for objects above horizontal. It's OK for flying if I look directly at the model. But unless I look directly at it, it isn't sharp. I have never been able to get a definitive answer whether that is normal for positive correction lenses or not.

And personally, I would never consider Lasic or other refractive surgery. I would much prefer wearing glasses to having someone muck up my one shot at correction. Not to mention possible complications. And refractive surgery doesn't correct for presbyopia (the inability to change focus from far to near or vice versa) so you are stuck at a fixed correction and still need readers for close up work unless you have not lost the ability to shift focus.

Yeah, I have considered lasik, but I think I'll stick with contacts. I am an ideal, perfect candidate for lasik, but I just can't help but think about those few unfortunate souls who end up with ruined vision. I would prefer to keep the vision I have and stick a couple of pieces of plastic in my eyes every morning.

I had the lasik done and it is amazing!
However, they didn't say my vision was going to be reversed! I was near-sighted when I walked into the surgery and when I came out I was far-sighted. Given the option I would have rather have kept my near-sightedness for small detail work.
Also, in low light situations your visions goes weak and you make out details. For example, reading a street sign at night is not what it should be.

funny how different people get different results from the lasik. Mine came out perfect. Every one that had it done kept telling me how at night you get a star effect from head lights. I did not get any of that.

Will be 50 next month and have worn glasses my whole life . Born with colorblindness and near blind in one eye has its challenges and disadvantages especially with overcast skys . Orientation becomes difficult the higher and further out I fly . On blue sky days I dont have as much of a problem . Getting old has its downsides for this hobby , not only sight but the ability to make quick corrections from brain to sticks as well . Hopefully us older guys have many more enjoyable years of flying ahead of us .

Im going to get my eyes fixed, Its time. Im going to have a new set of glasses made for long distance and Ill keep the ones I have for up close they seem to work pritty good. I went out on a fly today and 30ft no problem, out 100yards starting to loose it somewhat, well a lot. I can still see it but dont know if its coming or going. Think Im going to focus on getting my eyesight on the 50 to 300 yard range and screw the rest. I have a range im thinking of and I wonder if somebody can make a set of lenses to accommodate.

If it doesn't fly sell it!

Not to worry anyone, but presbyopia is not the only problem that affects eyes over approx. 40. According to my eye doctor, cataracts also start to develop in the 40+ crowd.

I had Lasik about 6 years ago with incredibly good results - better than 20/15 vision. I've noticed that my visual acuity is just not what it used to be even though the eye chart still checks out better than 20/20. I have a lot of floaters. One big one is directly in my center of vision. It really shows up with a bright clear blue sky.

I guess I should go back to the doctor and get checked for cataracts. On second thought, maybe a new 90 is a better idea!

With blended lenses you can have it all if they fit you correctly. One pair and you can focus up close and far away and for the most part you don't even notice you are wearing them. The key is getting fitted correctly and not accepting less than perfection.

Without my glasses, I am stuck at somewhat beyond infinity.... close up is quite out of focus. It gets better the farther away I look but it never gets perfect. With my glasses, I can focus to about 10-12 inches at the closest and all the way to infinity. There is no transition.... it happens gradually and you don't notice it at all unless you try to look at something close up that is above center or far away that is well below center. But for 99% of life, including flying, they are wonderful. They aren't cheap though. But well worth it in my opinion. There are even online places that will make glasses to your prescription (including blended lenses) for about half what your local optical shop will charge you. Useful for prescription sunglasses too.

Greetings:

As with the many of you, I to am in the same shape!! As a result, I fly a 90 and I have painted my ship fluorescent Yellow on top and fluorescent Orange on the bottom. It works for me when I go inverted!

A person just has to find a way around the problem!

If we did not have problems in life then we would not have solutions!!

No.No thank you very much... I'll be here all week!!

Hi Guys:

46 same issues. I had Lasik this year. Mostly good, but now I get "haloing" in certain light. Especially gray light, and with bright objects on dark backgrounds. My brain is adjusting to the aberrations, but it is annoying at times.

That said, I've worn glasses since I was 4, and it's great to be able to not deal with glasses fogging, getting rained on, or trying to id my wife by bathing suit color at the water park (very dangerous, but sometimes fun, LOL).

I did not know there were variations on this procedure. I paid for the BEST Lasik procedure at the best place I could find. My brother went to a different facility, and ended up having a procedure called "PRK" on one eye and Lasik on the other because of thin corneas. PRK is more uncomfortable and takes longer to heal, but, his PRK eye is near perfect after a few months, his Lasik eye has the issue I have with slight haloing.

I still need reading glasses for model work and in low light, but can read fine in good light and on the computer. If I had to do it over, I would, but I would do the PRK procedure in both eyes and deal with the short term discomfort.

Just my two cents. Your mileage may vary.

Oh, I had 20/800 vision before the surgery. I'm now technically 20/20, aside from the ghosting/halo issue. If your eyes aren't bad, the longer you wait, the better they get with this technology. So patience is a virtue to a point.

Acuvue Moist changed my life. I have a slight short sightedness (-0.75), and these are disposable daily contacts you just slap on. I only use them on days I'm driving (or flying), if I stay in the house then I'm good without. I guess a very mild color blindness issue didn't help my vision either, although I'm not sure how bad it is.
You throw them away and put a new pair every day, so no maintenance issue (or trying to find lost lenses on the floor if they fall out). No dry eyes with these also, unless you are 14 hours straight or doing very long periods in front of a monitor (which I do).

I originally had issues with the 450 on overcast days, crashed few times. It greatly improved with a yellow canopy. My 700 came yellow (don't they all) and the 600 will be turned to yellow sometime. Anyway once you're comfortable flying and start listening to logic and not your eyes (you extrapolate the position and orientation of the model, not just look at it), it's a nonissue really.

Eventually I'll get Lasik, but only in 20-30 years from now. The technology would surely be somewhere else, and you better wait for your eyes to stabilize before you go on such procedures or you'll experience vision reversal (near to far, etc) later on in life.

Anyway, fly big, bright helis. It's more fun anyway

I have about 20 pairs of cheap readers buy them at costco or target for 2 bucks all around the house and I still loose them or wind up with about 2 pair stuck in the front of my collar. It's hell getting old
