Getting older is a lot of fun when it comes to wisdom and the things we have learned over the younger guys but when the eyes start to go south, Im getting really irritated not seeing far away and up close like im use to. I lost orientation of the heli due to distance and almost crashed Sunday. I guess I need to realise that a pair of glasses are in order in order to keep flying. I have put off the inevitable too long and need to get with the program I guess.. Anybody having these same issues?

If it doesn't fly sell it!

I'm 41 and am in the same boat as you guys. I'm planning on going in for an exam soon and am not looking forward to wearing glasses or messing with contacts. I hear lasic is really expensive but at this point I don't even know what my options are.

It's called presbyopia. It's a hardening of the eye lens that starts in the early 40's.

I am 41 myself and had to use cheaters for the first time when I was tying up flies. Do not wait to get glasses, the less strain on you eyes the better. It does suck but the sooner you get glasses the better, so far it is only up close that has affected me. Welcome to getting old.

So long and thanks for all the fish!

As TaleGunner said :

It only gets worse.. You think helis are expensive, just wait until you have to purchase lenses and frames!!ouch However, if you enjoy this hobby and want to continue flying, you really have no other choice. You may not like it at first, but you will probably get used to it in time, as we all seem to do. Look on the bright side. At least your vision can be corrected. Been there, done that. I wish you well.

Pound for Pound, Heli's are a blast..... Roland

Anybody having these same issues?

yeah, it happened to me at the ripe old age of nine. At this point (22) i am so myopic that if i take my glasses off, i can't focus on my belt buckle.

I seem to have stabilized for now at least, haven't needed new glasses in 3 years or so. I dont even wanna think about twenty years from now...

TaleGunner had it right... I talked about it with Ed @ GrandRC, and his solution is that as you get older, you just need a bigger heli...

I guess it's that or learn to fly low and tight, but I think a bigger heli is just easier...

I know it is that I just dont want to admit that i cant see $hit anymore outside of 25 yards or as close as 6in. Everything else is in focus.. No man wants to concede to age but at some time just says #$%& it and move on.

If it doesn't fly sell it!

Sadly so. Crashed a friends heli completely due to the onset of poor eyesight. I find myself now forcing myself to stop flying earlier and not taking it up half as high.

Sometimes I actually experience double vision. Depth perception is headed to the crapper as well. I seem to still be able to do hurricanes without killing myself but i'd better watch it on that one.

It can sometimes be depressing and deeply frustrating. I have some prescription lenses that are about 3 years old but I have never worn them. Vision is worse with them on. In fact, anything I put on degrades my distance vision doesn't matter if it is the screwed up prescriptions or the expensive sunglasses or even just safety glasses - I end up tearing them off before the flight is over.

I really need to pony up the cash and find a high end ophthalmologist. The "low-end" boys at the jack-in-the-box lens shops just don't cut it.
