Hi guys,

Many people say that shooting photos or video, is the best helicopter Maxi Joker 2, others say that the best Vario XLV or Observer and etc.

So, what is your opinion? What is the most suitable helicopter for AP and AV?

All opinion are welcome!
Evaldas.

What do you plan to do with the helicopter?
What camera do you plan to use?
What is your budget?
Where do you plan to buy the setup?
How well can you fly?
How well can you build?

If You want to know a bout me - I am enough experienced pilot.
For example ...

What do you plan to do with the helicopter?
Shoot video and also if I need - photo
What camera do you plan to use?
From smal HD cameras (~0,5 kg) to large cameras (~2-3 kg).
What is your budget?
I do not think that this is an important issue
Where do you plan to buy the setup?
What kind of setup?
How well can you fly?
Very well !
How well can you build?
Very well !

I`m take photo and try to shoot video. But for video need big and stable helikopter. Now I am looking for a higher and stable helicopter and to me interesting all Yours opinion.

Few my photos...

I like the boat and dock shot!
Do you normally shoot aerials at 1/160th?

My vote is for the Minicopter camp, but I'm a bit biased since I've been using them for the last 8 years and Gerd has treated me well.

Here are the results I'm getting:

>>If You want to know a bout me - I am enough experienced pilot.<<

No I don't want to know about you. I was asking because I couldn't figure out what you want.

To some one the best is a little $50 video camera on a Trex 450. To some one else the best is the Red One on a Turbine Observer.

>>From smal HD cameras (~0,5 kg) to large cameras (~2-3 kg).<<

Now we are getting somewhere. For a small HD camera something like a Trex 600e would do fine. For a 3 kg still image camera you may consider the Maxi Joker.

>>Shoot video and also if I need - photo<<

The kind of video is very important. Most likely the best "compromise" is a Maxi Joker. Although if you video camera gets too heavy and you need all sorts of down link you may have to consider the Bergen Observer or the turbine observer if you have the money.

>>What kind of setup? <<

The helicopter, engine/motor, fuel/batteries etc.

The reason I ask is that parts available is more important in determining what is "best". If you cannot get a Maxi Joker or a Bergen Observer even if you have all the money in the world then neither one is the "best" for you isn't it?

>>I`m take photo and try to shoot video. But for video need big and stable helikopter. Now I am looking for a higher and stable helicopter and to me interesting all Yours opinion.<<

You have to decide what you want as best. Electric or gas. Electric is quieter, less vibration but less payload. Gas is noisier, more vibration but higher payload. Turbine is noisy, smooth, high payload but flight duration is very short.

In my country there is no distributor to rc helicopters and their parts. So I`m must everything buy from USA or EUROPE.

I think for me is the best electric. My target payload is from 2 kg to 5 kg.

So, I have only one solution - Maxi Joker 2?

Thanks,
Evaldas.

Bergens and Jokers both have excellent and proven reputations.
One thing you might consider is which one is easier to get parts for?
My own opinion is the scenario where you need a part fast and it's sitting in for a week waiting to clear customs as opposed to shipping something from within the EU and not having to pay customs as well.
Having said that, I just received a Fedex package mailed on Friday or Sat in the U.S. and it was delivered today in France. I'm amazed by this one so a Bergen is not that far away if you plan your parts availability.

No harm done. Thank you for understanding. I wish fixing the world's problem is that simple. Now a Chinaman can get along with a Lithuanian.

Yes, as long as you keep within 5kg you are better off with the Minicopter. As long as you can buy parts from your side of the world. The trick is to find a dealer that can sell you the items.

Yes, they're the same size.
The MJ3 is the lastest model though and I don't think you can buy the MJ2 kit new any more (parts are still available though).
There are more camera mount options for the MJ2 but I'm sure the manufacturers will catch up and provide MJ3 options in the near future.

Same size machines. The major change was the re-design the of Joker's the upper fuselage to encorporate the new additional motor for the "Dual Drive" concept.
In the previous Joker family the upper fuselage had the servo's mounted horizontally and inside the frame. The tail rotor was belt driven.
The Joker 3 family has the servo's mounted vertically and outside the frame. This left more room to add the new motor to drive the tail rotor to be mounted inside the frame. The choices of driving the tail rotor are torque-tube driven off the main motor or adding the new motor to drive the torque tube independent of the main motor. Belt driven I think was still an option.

The option to mount a motor at the end of the boom to directly drive the tail rotor was pioneered by "tabbytabb" and became a kit upgrade. This option is now available for the older Maxi-Joker 2's to do away with the belt drive.

That is the big obvious change, but with the new style fuselage came new design gears, rotorhead, new shape to the lower fuselage to match the upper fuselage, and space inside the upper fuselage to mount the gyro internally between the frames of the aft fuselage.
There are more changes which you can read about here:

I've got one of the tail mounted direct drive motors for my MJ2 (haven't fitted it yet though).
I really think that for video it's the way to go as it minimises the number of moving parts.
It also helps with weight distribution for a front mount (what most guys are using for serious video).
Tabb seems to be having great success with his anyway at least.
Another benefit is that for travelling you can just plug out the tail boom with no worries about belt tension, gear mesh etc.

I've returned the standard ESC that came with the taildrive for a Jive 60LV, this way I get to use the 4S tail drive pack as one of my receiver packs (the Jive has an inbuilt BEC). So overall the tail drive doesnt even mean an extra set of packs for me to charge above my standard setup.

PS. Really love that shot of the boat at the jetty too!
