Engines Plugs Mufflers Fuel > New YS91 SR being Difficult

A buddy of mine has a new YS91SR in his Stratus that is being very difficult.

He has about ten flights on it so far, and it is running very rough. It is growling and gurgling in the turns, and every once in a while it "hiccups" which causes a quick tail twitch.

He replace the glow plug with a new one, and that didn't seem to work. He then replaced all of the fuel lines and that didn't work.

Temp at the head was 180 and about 95 on the back plate.

We did notice some silver contamination on the back side of the red head where it bolts to the case. The back surface of my YS91 SR is clean, so we were wondering what that might be.

It also gurgles in a full climbout.

Occasionally in addition to a tail twitch, it seems to glitch causing the heli to jump like it's a cyclic glitch. It does this in a hover occasionally.

The tail twitch (accompanied by a change in engine rpm and engine noise) is what is of primary concern.

Any advice from experience would be greatly welcome!

Thanks.

I got a helicopter for my girlfriend,
Hope she doesn't outfly me soon!

Yes it's running rich, but not slobbering rich.

Would you work on the high needle first or the mid needle???

well hard to say. is it on a gov yet? you said it's gurgling on hard punches.. thats the high needle.

can you do aileron tick tocks yet? that will show mid range issues quickly.

Make sure you know which is the Hi and Mid needles.
When mine did as you say yours is doing, I put the needles back to factory settings and all is well.

Hello gentlemen... I have the engine in question. The hover and high needles are set the right way. 1.5 turns out on hover and 1 out on high. The engine makes the surge with both the governor off and on. The best way to describe it is in a steady hover the engine will surge.. a little faster, then a little slower which causes the helicopter to jump a little. It almost sounds like the engine is not getting a steady supply of fuel. I dropped the engine and took apart the regulator and carb..everything looked fine. The screws going into the regulator came out very easy though. I am not sure how tight they were to start with. Maybe that produced a slight difference in pressure which was affecting the way the regulator delivered the fuel to the carb.. Very perplexing.. any other advice would be greatly appreciated.. I am hoping someone has delt with this issue before.

Those symptoms sound exactly like what my old ST did, when the carb bolts worked themselves loose...

It doesn't take much to make the regulator not function properly

I can please 1 person a day.
It's NOT your day.
Tomorrow's not lookin good, either

another thing to check is the one way valve. I just found one that had some trash in it (brand new btw). it wasnt sealing correctly and the pressure was whacked. simple fix, but another thing to check.

I thought of the one way valve, but my pressure is great. After the flight major air comes out when I release the pressure. Also I am using a header tank which should give consistent flow... Keep the ideas coming I appreciate the responses... We'll figure this out

I had a similar issue with a brand new YS91 sr. The small fuel tube between the carb and regulator had a very small slice on the back side which was not visible at first glance. The needle settings were not having effect like they should. Replaced and all was fine.

I always replace that little crappy piece of fuel tubing that comes from the factory between the regulator and the carb with a better quality piece. Too many things that can go wrong on these machines enough as it is to later allow a problem to occur due to soemthing so small and unsuspecting which would otherwise drive you crazy in trying to pinpoint.

Open the Hi 2 turns. Let it run like that and see if the surge is there. If none, start to lean Hi to a point where there is no surge.
