Hi guys

looking at getting a new starter and love the convenience of the small align cordless starter but after trying a friends I thought it absolutely hammered the starter shaft on the 90 engine.

I've read that guys seem to love them and they work BUT since they have been out for a few months now has anybody had one cause any issues on their heli?? Can it break anything on the heli or engine??

Let me know you experience with this starter please.

Yes, guys will say Dynatron is great but want to hear about the align starter only

align starter way to go,i dont think you can break anything, it has a built in load breaker. starts my 90's no problem.
only negative: its a 3s 11.1v works best with full charge. good enough for a weekend.

Higher c rating lipos will provide Enough torque even after being drained. Recent test I did as I noticed the same thing, but the 40c batteries had more torque even in the orange and red lights.

I don't understand how someone could possibly pay $120 for a starter. It completely blows my mind...

If you think 120 is alot of money for a starter then paying 250 plus dollars for the dynatron w/makita battery, one way shaft, and charger combo is friggin rediculous right. Atleast I thought so. The way I look at it is I'm paying $120 for more than just a STARTER. One way built in, has a shaft already, digital battery meter outside the starter, cutoff built in so you dont try to overpower a flooded engine and possibly blow a rod, and a neat case dedicated for the starter. Not bad right.

I've had a Minimax starter for about 6 years now, which I think is essentially this http://www.centuryheli.com/products...tnm=CN2256EZ-90.

Still strong and fires a cold 90 in no time. I was using it with a 12V 7A lead acid battery but now I have it rigged with a 3S 2000 lipo.

You are just paying for a nicer case and status of spending $75 more.

I don't understand how someone could possible pay $120 for a starter. It completely blows my mind..

For the last 10 years i used a CHEAP TorqMaster Hobbico charger recently I put 2-6cell MiAh batts on it I used Zip Ties to secure. I had a 1 way bearing shaft.. Thats about $80.. some shafts alone go for $90 bucks (the 1 piece ones)

i got SICK of the zip ties DIGGING into me hands every time i started not to mention the dam shaft keept falling out of the starter, not to mention the 2 NIMH wouldn't turn the .70 motor over it just got REAL HOT...

I got sick of screwing around with my starter instead of actually flying...

so i plunked down the $120 AND I AM GLAD I DID!!

Don't now about the TorqMaster, but I bet you could have done a better job with the minis and a lipo.

Save your $$$$ and buy something that is worth it.

It's true the Align starter is a pretty good bargain compared to a tricked out Sullivan setup

http://www.readyheli.com/S613_Sulli..._p/sulp1613.htm

and still need the Makita setup

http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc...catalogId=10053

(that's the setup I'm going to end up with)

Would be nice if Align would bundle their starter setup with both the airplane cup and the heli wand extension so you wouldn't have to buy it separate

to be clear, I like the Dynatron, my first one is 15 years old and still runs great. But it is expensive, especially with that red extension and the FE/Makita pack.

This is an expensive hobby outright. $120 for an all-in-one cordless starter ain't bad. You gotta pay to play.

Had my Dynatron for 17 years, still cranking hard. 4 years ago I added a new K&S starter extension with one-way ~$50. That and a dynatron today will put you over $120 with no batteries. The Align starter looks sweet, I just hope it lasts longer that their helicopters.

No, not even close. You are paying for an ergonomic compact design that you can toss in a cargo pocket. The ability to run out and quickly start the helicopter that died on the pad instead of doing the walk of shame and just pocket the starter and get flying is worth the price. Not having an oversized cumbersome beast to wrangle or carry is worth the price.

It's interesting that helicopter people accuse plankers of being resistant to change. I have seen several people exhibit the same behavior when it comes to these starters, despite countless positive testimonials. If a person is happy with their old school starter then it is not cost effective to get the Align starter. For those who are in the market for a new starter, I see no reason to not get the Align unit unless you love the thought of holding a coffee can when you start your helicopter.

And yes, I do wish they just sold the unit with a heli wand and a plank cup.

We'll see about long term reliability. I have had mine since it came out, and finally recharged the battery a few weeks ago and it still had a red, orange and one green light still going. No problems as of yet.

A buddy of mine recently let me use his align starter at our last fun fly. I did not like it... its not smooth. It looks cool and has the new factor to it but it reminded me of a hammer drill.

its not really ergonomic, sure its compact but the way it makes you grip it leaves a lot of room for improvement.

A 12.00 dollar starter and a couple old 3 cell lipo packs are all you need . Unless you're one of those guys that need the latest and greatest . Spend your money on a "good" starter and batt pack , i'll spend my dough on parts to keep my birds in the air .

If you're not living on the edge you're just taking up space !
