I am wondering how they came up with "Windows 7" name.
Why "7"?

As I was told, those were business operating systems and outside the lineage. The rest were all consumer.

Windows 7 is named because 7 is a lucky number... and frankly, Microsoft Windows needs all the luck it can get... from what people say, this version of Windows works great, so I guess it worked...

I'm well aware of NT, 2000, and the server versions. I was told by an MS rep that they didn't count them since they were not "consumer" operating systems.

It's not that they aren't consumer versions, it's that they are the same version number as their respective consumer product.

Windows 1.01/1.02/1.03/1.04
Windows 2.03/2.10/2.11
Windows 3.0/3.1/Workgroups 3.1/NT 3.5/NT NT 3.51.1057
Windows 95 4.00.950/4.00.950A/4.00.1111/4.00.1212/4.00.1214/NT4.0
Windows 98 4.10.1998/4.10.2222/ME 4.90.3000
Windows 2000 NT/XP 5.0.2195 and all the version 5 numbers for the different XP's
Vista NT 6.0.6000.0 and all it's associated versions
Windows 7, which is still v6 but 6.1.7100+

Inside all those are are many different versions, and version numbers, but that's basically how it breaks down, so 7 is actually 6.1.

NT/2000/XP are all the same. Just like 95/98/ME were. Same version, just large updates

This makes me chuckle.

The issues with Vista was that it was part of the MS growth groan. Lot's of driver issues with legacy hardware, program incompatibilities, blah, blah, blah. Now that software engineers have accommodated for Vista, it runs pretty well. In fact, it was the only OS that I never once got a call from the wife in the middle of the day asking why it locked up, BSOD'd, etc. Of course, I run high end/new components.

Win 7 is a re-badge of Vista with a little more support for the hardware that some just do not want to get rid of. If 7 had come out when Vista did, everybody would have complained about it and loved the next. Instead, MS decided to sacrifice one OS to prep everyone for the next. In the end, they got what they wanted...money.

All in all, I did not mind Vista, however, 7 is much cleaner, faster, and finally made me go 64 bit.

Wait..what!?!?! No, that can't be!
