I try the auto with the T500 at about 30ft high and I find that it does not have that kind of hang time the 50 size nitro has just about touch down. Instead, it just slows down the descent a little bit when I start increasing my pitch from -4 all the way to +12. I am running my 3-pt throttle hold curve as -4, 0, +12. My idle up throttle curve is flat at 87.5%. fyi - I am pretty good autoing 50 size machine from over 200ft and so I know how the whole process is like.

Should I increase my throttle curve higher so that the blades have more headspeed before flipping the throttle hold switch? Any other suggestions to improve the hang time before the touch down.

My HS is around 2800rpm. My TH pitch curves are -12 to +12. I think -4 is too little. You need to continually adjust the negative collective to keep the rate of decent consistent. Only 1 chance to flare a 500. Always have some forward momentum. In some instances when the angle of attack of the heli is pitching back or if there is a headwind you need to add more negative collective to keep the decent speed consistent.

Don't try to compare it to a 50 size heli imo. It's really more like a 450 when it autos. Don't get me wrong, the 450 autos just fine and I've done thousands with a 450. The 500 is definitely better than a 450 but not by a whole lot. Good advise given above to keep some forward momentum. I use +-12 degrees in all modes of flight including throttle hold so it's hard to tell exactly how much negative to use. You really need to go by how the heli is performing.

There is a very fine line between "hobby" and "mental illness."

These are heavy pigs lol and you need full pitch range and as much headspeed as you can helps but most headspeed is developed as you fall.

you need to go higher then 50' more like 200' and use more negative pitch, youll have 1 shot to get it right coming in.

theres a few good vids out of the guys doing them and threads about how what why and where.

Things I have found help when auto my 500.

1) Start a little further away than you would with a 50, and use some forward elevator - then use back elevator for the flair to loose forward momentum.

2) Run the Align 425F blades which are slightly heavier than the 425D's, these help maintain inertia.

3) Wind, all autos are generally easier on a windy day.

Yes auto forwards into the wind if possible, I have done inverted auto's with mine with Align 425D's and that was flipping out not rolling! Make sure the drive system is very free spinning and dont come in too fast, as long as you have a tiny bit of negative you will be fine.
