Am Considering a the 5D MkII(For Stills/Panos/Videos!)

My Question is, would the 5D during video recording have the same rolling shutter issues as Consumer Camcorders using CMOS sensors, given the same level of vibration?

not a direct answer to your question, but I managed to get rid of the rolling shutter effect on a canon HF 100 by mounting the camera on a plate with anti vibration jelly underneath. Vibration still comes through slightly if you bank hard, but in normal flight it is 100% clear. This is on a MJ2, I think a gasser would be a different story.

5D

No, It is not near as bad. The CMOS sensors and how they are used in a circuit is where the difference is noticeable. The 5DMarkII can make a rolling shutter look good compared to others.

IMHO,

Rolling shutter -

Its significance depends on how and what you are shooting and at what frame rate. Because the CMOS chip paints the lines from top to bottom, if the camera is moving in a brisk panning motion, these lines will be drawn at a skewed angle that is off true vertical. If your shots require panning across buildings or other objects with straight lines it will be very noticeable and ugly. Smoothcam will make this issue worse and deshaker can make it "somewhat" better. This flaw/issue applies in varying amounts to any camera with a CMOS chip, HC-5, 5D, 7D, EX1, Red one, etc. This is why most of the aerial clips you see using these cameras don't have much quick panning if straight vertical lines are present in the images. Our eyes pick up distortion in hard lines quite easily. General vibration also shows up more noticeably with hard vertical lines but it is a different issue than rolling shutter.

We recently finished shooting a commercial for this years Superbowl that was filmed with the Red one and 5D mark 2. Most of the clips had buildings in them. A few required panning so it will be interesting to see what the compositing crew ends up doing with them.

Here is an example of rolling shutter at varying frame rates.

5D is acceptable IMO but not as good as the EX1. 7D is on par with the EX1 when you shoot at 60p.

I find both these cameras to be fairly sensitive to vibration compared to an EX1 or HVX200.

It seems the rolling shutter distortion in the 7D is not as bad as the 5D, maybe due to the cropped sensor in the 7D. My opinion is they are both exceptional.

Huge Difference between the 5D and 7D in the above video

Surprised the difference is as pronounced. 7D looked very good but I understand better with the demonstration. How the vertical lines are skewed....makes perfect sense, I think Sonys software has improved with practice makes perfect, image capture and fast imagine adjustment/acquisition firmware!

Anyway, that was alot of jargan,, LOL @ ME
