I hate wasting a perfectly good airframe. OTOH I can't bring myself to fly glow fuel anymore so I had to convert my old Xcell graphite to electric. After a lot of procrastinating I finally hunker down and made the motor mount. Now I just have to figure out where to put the batteries.

So this is how the batteries are going to mount.

Looks nice. I like the big Scorpion motor. I'm tired of the nitro fuel too. Electric is so nice and clean.

>>should have done away with the clutch though<<

LOL, there is no clutch in there. It is only for show. The fan hub bolts directly to the clutch bell.

>>man thats an old one!<<

Actually this started off as the first Xcell I ever owned. Probably back in the late 80's. The original airframe just took on a life of it's own and started evolving. From the all metal frame it went to a Bergen Gasser conversion, then back to the graphite 99 frame and the tail got stretched. I doubt if there is an original part in it anymore though.

That is the best electric conversion so far. The motor matched the helicopter perfectly. It is a Scorpion 4035-400 outrunner. I am using two purple bricks so that is 10 cells at 8000 mah. So far I landed at 10 minutes just to be safe but probably can go to 15 minutes or more easily. At 90 percent throttle with governor it is no 3D machine but the punch out on vertical is crisp and perfect for aerial photo work.

The helicopter is just as smooth as I remembered it. The weight although I didn't weigh it on a scale is not bad. The aluminum mounting plate worked well as a heat sink and the motor came down at 115 degrees F. Battery packs are only luke warm at 92 degrees F.

Over all I am impressed. The linkages are old school and all single pushrods but they are doing their job as long as I don't stress them.

Here are some in flight pictures

The rain let up and I finally get a chance to get some in flight images of the eX-Cell. It flies for at least 10 minutes on 10S and the battery packs come back luke warm at 90 degrees F. The motor is also warm at 115 degrees F. Looks like I am not stressing anything out at all. The helicopter is just as smooth as I can remember and flies better than 20 years ago. Well 10 years if you count from the time I stopped upgrading.

The brand new original unpainted canopy is very brittle. It started cracking when I put it on the helicopter so the pictures in flight has no canopy. I ordered a fiberglass canopy to put on it.

The motor is working out great so far.

>>but i think i'll keep the clutch<<

My clutch is fake. I bolted the fan hub to the clutch housing.

>>who makes those battery packs<<

Those are True RC 8000 mah packs.

Nice work. Maybe lose the start cone; it's dead weight. If you drill some holes in the motor mount plate at sensible spacing, it'll lighten it up AND may improve the cooling by increasing airflow through the plate, not just around it.

Yes it is but it looks cool and doesn't really weigh that much.

Yup, that I plan to do. The only thing is that it is at very low priority because 1) It has no heat issue and 2) It has no weight issue.

The only issue I can foresee is the control linkages. They are still the original 2 mm size although they are all brand new.

The other issue may be the carbon tail boom. I hope it can stand up to the test of time because it is old and I hope it doesn't get brittle.

I flew for MA for over decade. There has never been a documented issue with their carbon booms becoming brittle with age. Don't sweat that one...

Thank you. I didn't think so but if there is anything out of the entire helicopter that may be a weak spot. Glad to know that it is not.

The Xcell is flying so smooth that I am thinking about putting it to work.
