So I've been trying to break in my new engine and have been leaning it out to the point where it's almost just 1 full turn out from off and it seems the engine get real jumpy like the fuel is lean enough that all the jiggling makes breaks in the fuel flow and degrades the fuel flow. If I put it back at the recommended 1 1/2 turns it acts fine but I can touch the bottom for almost forever it seems. Does it being like 50degrees out have anything to do with this? (though this was after the 2nd tank of fuel)Or should I lean it back out to a couple of clicks, just before it starts acting weird. I don't use a header tank if that helps.

Rappy 50 Titan, OS Hyper 50, Futaba 2.4 7ch.

You want it warm but not hot. Whatever needle setting that takes. Depends on your fuel (oil and nitro content), muffler you're using, and the weather.

i agree.. you would rather be a little rich then lean. too lean and you will blow a hole in your piston... ive seen this happen 4 times... once to me.

I think a good rule of thumb for starters is keeping it rich enough to be able to hold your finger on the back plate for at least 4 seconds.

I use a temp gun to get my temperatures right for tuning. I try to run about 210 on my os hyper 50, and 220 on my novarossi 57. i take the temp on the head.

also, this is a really good way in my opnion to tell if it is too lean... spool it up and lift it off the ground... hover or fly or whatever for about 30 senconds. hit throttle hold... if the engine sounds like a dirtbike when they get off the throttle you know the sound... it is too lean.. the sound should be smooth., you should get a headder tank, or an OS bubbeless clunk. (get the clunk in my opnion)

I find the harder I "throw down" at the field... the more peices i have to pick up.

I always run a full gallon trough very rich (no crazy moves just FF and hover), than starting to lean it out.
Currently I'm between 200-210 on the head with the .91 HZ and it runs perfect.

Fly it like you stole it!!!

Run it a little rich. Fly it around and do some full power climbouts to check the power then land and check the temp of the backplate. You'll know if you cant keep your finger on it if its too hot. You'll probably need to set your throttle curves after the engine is tuned. Rich is better.
