Gasser Model RC Helicopters > gas X-Cell, how did I break the motor mount?!?!?

I'm thinking that I'm starting to get my Gas X-Cell dialed in, it's now very responsive, and flying smoothly too!

The engine is running smooth, I'm starting to remember how much I love this X-Cell!

Tonight I was boring some holes in the sky, not doing too much... some loops, rolls, a flip (sort of), a few stall turns.

I landed it, and started checking over things as I usually do. I tipped it on one skid and for some reason decided to tap the skid. I heard something jingling.. like metal on metal... ping, ping, ping. What the heck is that!?!?!?

I was about to think I was hearing things as I couldn't reproduce the noise again when I noticed that the left engine mounting point was broken!! I mean, it was cracked right off of the crankcase exposing a nice hole in the side so I could see the flywheel clearly!!

What would cause this to happen? Has anyone ever seen this happen?? I haven't had a crash in a while! In fact, I think I only had two mishaps with this bird, once when a tail blade holder failed, I was hovering about 5 feet off the ground, so that wasn't too violent a touch down, and another when my upper frames failed due to vibration from a main shaft bearing failure. That was another hovering about 2 feet off the ground, so it didn't go plowing into the ground violently.

Is there any setup issues that could cause something like this to happen?

So.. do I repair it, or is it now time to order a new G231PUH?

I know I can order the broken part... but I would like to know why it failed.

Any ideas??

Had the same thing happen to me ,no crashes, no excessive vibes. Broke the left motor mount boss off, replaced crankcase, gave the broken one to a friend he had it welded back together ,stronger then before. No cause found, possible a bad casting, weak point ? who knows.

Dave,

Wow.. two like this? Mine is a vintage 1996 engine. This thing was really running great!

I think I'll call MinAir and see if they know of any issues that can cause this.

I checked and a new crankcase is about $65 (plus shipping, of course). I'm checking on prices on the new G231PUH, since the crankcase is a bit more than 1/4 the cost of a new engine.

Mine was the original engine also, probably 5 or 6 years old.

Well, I think I know why the engine mount broke.

When I was taking the engine out I didn't find the spacer which is supposed to be between the engine and the frame. So unless it rolled away as I was unthreading things, my guess is that it fell out when I was trying to align the screws the last time I installed the engine. Perhaps it was trapped between the engine and the frame, so it looked like it was in place, but the screw didn't actually go through it. Then when I was doing some flying which stressed the frame a bit, the spacer fell out since it was not properly installed in the first place.

I'm just guessing to all of this as I don't seem to have the spacer anywhere!

I thought I'd report back so no one thinks it was a flaw! It seems the only flaw was my own brain fade!

Broken Case

I had exactly the same thing happen, and for the same reason. It seems that it would be impossible to miss that spacer, but that's what I did.

I got a new case from Bruce Hansen for $25 and installed it with no further problems. Check

Paul,

Yes, I think I did a stupid thing!! But at least I know why!

If I can get a part quick, I'll be back in the air. I'm still taking the engine apart. I had to build a flywheel puller!
