I have personally found in the past 2 years model shops in the uk give bad service and couldn`t give a dam if you buy from them or not. The discusion came up on my local flying field and hear are some coments i heard " we walk into the shop and the shop assistants just stare and make us feel as if we was intruding" " I went in to buy some odds and sods and it seemed as if it was to much hassel to serve me as i was not buying a gas turbin kit or £1000 pound heli"
Has anyone else heard simular as us guys mostly shop over the net now as the local shops don`t need the money it seems.

Its not all shops but over half of them.

heavy heli LOL I deserved that coment as i talk as i type which causes them typing erros.
I Have found great service through internet shops an sometimes postage is cheaper than getting the car out and shopping local. By the way im in the uk in buckinghamshire so it may be just our area

It's not only UK its a global effect because (I guess)
they are fed up of being asked how much and the answer almost 1000pounds.And the candidate buyer leaving with head down because they expect toys prices.

I don't frequent the UK model shops very often because I think it's just too far to drive.

I swear by Model & Hobby World up in Lancaster (Skerton). Depending upon the banter in the shop I sometimes swear at them too!

Great guys - happy to help.

I think that if these shops become more friendly to local modelers and new customers then the £1000 could be £800 which would benifit all .

Hi guys

I live in Dubai, and when on trips, i like to go to model shops.

The UK shops are like all others....... It depends on the shop.

Some are fantastic, some are crap!!!!

If i want something specific, i usually phone a few days in advance and then walk in and buy it.

On one trip, i wanted a particular Hacker motor/esc. I phoned at 17:00 Uk time and checked for stock. I then flew all night to the UK and got to the shop at 09:00 the next morning.....i was a little tired and cranky and...... you guessed, they tried to push a different motor on me.....The idiot even said...the -12 and the -14 motor are about the same, whats the problem......If you really want, we can get you the correct motor......I was so pi$$ed off, i stood in the middle of the shop and phoned a model shop owner friend of mine in South Africa and arranged a mail order to Dubai..... I will never go to that shop in the UK again.

But on the flip side, i have always had great advice/service and shopping experience etc from 'Motors and Rotors' and 'Skyline'. The guys know there products, are friendly, helpful and welcoming of 'strangers'.....

Regards
Paul

Don't feel alone just because you're across the pond , we have alot of hobby shops with a mirror image in the States . Find yourself someone you enjoy buying from online and to hell with the rest . I do most of my shopping online because for now I don't have to give our thieving government their cut .

If you're not living on the edge you're just taking up space !

in a dedicated heli only shop which down here in the sw there are none i would expect the sales assistant not to be too excited if you where spending about 20 pounds or so but in a model shop that sell mostly every thing i would expect that heli pilots would get better treatment even if they spent only 20 pounds ,why? because all there other customers spend 1/2 an hour of the their time sorting through and moaning over a 20 pence piece of balsa wood, i think its us heli guys that keep these types of shops going espiacally in a world of computer where kids are no longer as intrested in makeing models or doing craft work

Ive used skyline and still do but only for the emergence parts as i find they can be welcoming one minute and not the next. As an instructor of a local club i would have thought i could be quite handy for picking up new custom for them.

In decline???

Im not sure what its like around the rest of the UK, but here in he north east, the number of shops has decreased dramatically!!

There is only 2 to 3 shops withing 30 - 45 mins drive now, where as a few years ago, there were at least a dozen!!

The one ive been using the most, Model Active of Chester-le-street, as its nearest at about 40 mins drive, doesnt stock all that much, but to be fair, they do cover all r/c genres, i.e. cars, planes, boats and helis, and they also do model trains.

Service isnt too bad, though i did have to wait 10 mins to be served the other night cos one guy was helping with this boy and his nitro car, while the other sat on the computer, all i can say is it must have been some really good porn!! lmao

Im currently doing a degree in business and management at uni an have been struggling to think of a field i'd like to go into, im thinking r/c AIRCRAFT might be the way

I think to work in a UK model shop you need some special attributes:

Poor vision- you need to not be able to see and therefore acknowledge customers on arrival in your shop.

A speech impediment so you can grunt at them when you do see them.

etc etc.. Like people say there are good and bad places all over the world. I am putting together a Hong Kong model shop guide with pictures which will be ready next month and it is a common problem the world over.

I think that it is not the most well paid job and that if you are good at sales you probably move on to a better paid job in a more profitable area.

Of course their are exceptions to every rule but if every shop made an effort to make you welcome on arrival in the shop it would be a good start. Even if they are with a customer they should tell you that they will be with you as soon as possible.

Small things make a difference and make the drive to the hobby shop worthwhile rather than let your mouse do the hard work for you.

You are there to give your hard earned cash to them..if they dont deserve it---WALK OUT--

More days at home would be nice!

British attitude to service in general is very bad. I think this comes off the back of a booming economy and very little need, in the past, to roll their sleeves up and get on with what needs doing. This is my experience in general and there are exceptions. Fastlads and Real-Raptors have both offered fast and friendly online service.
