I've been wondering whether my bud would've thought to include a shield on his rig were it not for Foo. I know he's plenty flippin' glad he did now.

As the story goes, on the way to his high school prom Foo snapped this pic with his cellcam -- and was never seen nor heard from again.

I remember it started with a W.
Foo was a young, naive RC heli rookie but that guy's situation was no joke.

He was a marginally-functional paranoid schizophrenic with genuine serious brain chemistry issues. We PM'd a bit but it was unproductive. Sad situation.

I sincerely hope he's found the meds he needs to get on with his life. It's one scary imaginary nightmare after another for those guys without their meds.

On a lighter note, anyone else fool around with turntable test benches?

That guy's 'product' has nothing to do with the test bench on this thread.

Turntable heli test benches seem useful, but if they don't somehow relieve resonance (which is what we're trying to find out) then they're clearly unsafe.

But no matter which way the 'blades' fall, $230 for what he sells is absurd. The parts are less than $10. Anyone skilled enough to build and fly RC helis could easily build one like his -- or one like this (which is much safer) in a few hours.

And no matter who makes 'em, they ALL should have a Foo Shield.

Few will buy his product.

OK Gimble

When I first saw this thread I thought you were just joking around but after reading for 2 days I decided to get out an old swift that resonates so bad on spool-up and shut down it scares me, it is smooth once spooled. I went and got out an old twister table ( square lazy susan you can stand on) and bolted the twist to it. the swift does spool up with very little resonance. All I think of is that the weight of the table and the fact that that the ball barrings move has a dampening effect.

Then I added some chili and made con carni Sorry couldn't resist.

CRASH! GLUE! REPEAT!

I've yet to use one, but the more I think about it the more I want to. I've got an EagleTree setup I've hardly ever used and I'm itchin' for a new project anyway.

I've noticed an increase in 'resonance' whenever I eat chili, carne or not.

Likely that was the most convenient place for him to put it. I would think a servo extension to bring it behind the Foo Shield would be a good idea -- or maybe he only needs to read it when his tests are done.

Sky, we've probably all seen both views of that Chinook ground resonating, and we've all seen RC helis resonate on spool-up and spool-down. What's at question here is why RC helis don't exhibit ground resonance when tied down on a turntable. More than a few have said they don't.

Thanks for posting though. No heli fanatic ever gets tired of watching multi-million dollar tandem rotor helicopters disintegrating.

I agree. I've already started building a similar stand. I don't see much point in using it for blade tracking nor tail setups, but it'll be fun to use with the Eagle Tree goodies for seeing what my electric birds are doing while under load.
