Depends on the transceiver you're using. Typical stuff around here is rated at 10-20km. If I use ZX transceivers, I can go upwards of 80km. This is all depending on quality of the fiber and splice points.

Wow, they travel longer then I thought.

So what is your war stories?

My best one is when I was working in California installing DirecTV. I get send to a lot of interesting places like heart of ghetto in Oakland.

One day I was working late, I got the the customer around 6pm, it was easy job so I decided to get it done. About 7pm I'm on the roof mounting the dish, I saw a few flashes a block away and bang bang bang. A few min later cop cars driving around, a lot of people activity. Finally police chopper showed up and they shined the light on me, that lights they use very bright, I wish that they keep the light one me little bit longer, because my head lamp wasn't working too well. heh.

One other time was same city, right near super bowl, raiders lost or something, road were close, helicopters flying around with lights, and smokes. I barely make it out of there.

* dog snatches your screw driver and is running around the yard

* getting swiped by a car while up in the bucket truck

* the half dressed teen taking a shower while your in her room

* a cross dressing father

* an army chick throwing hints like hand grenades (silk night gown with a slit going up to the waist)

* the house wife wanting a phone jack at her basement d-marc (sp) so she can record her husband

Kirk, I am sure i have dealt with some of your projects in my time so far. I was originally Bellsouth before the merge. I work at your POP sites here (fiber mainly) in Nashville and deal with your video group quite often.

Funny incident from my residential side of the telco world from a few years ago: I was helping another tech track down a problem in a house and we had to get to every jack. We had to move the bed in the master bedroom and you know what happens next. While in the process of moving the bed from the wall, the tech i was helping stepped on a "female pleasure toy" and it started buzzing under his foot. The lady comes in the room and instantly was red as a beet and had nothing to say.
I have a handful of stories but won't take up the space posting them all. There is always something happening in the telco world.

Thats funny!!

I always work remotley so I do not get to go out in the field. I would love to but I am stuck in the office at a desk job (I manage the voice and data network which is two different L3 switches)... I think we are one of the only CLECs with two different switch platforms so it complicates things.

I use to be a switch tech but moved on to switch planning and have been doing it ever since...

I understand the local plant clear to the DMARC but most of the work I do now involves switch capacity and NPA NXX routing at the DEOT and Tandem level. I work with a lot of the Bell South Translations techs, and our Account Manager so I do not get to hear the good stories from the field.

Thanks for the laugh, that will make a good story to tell the guys at work.

Kirk

Nothing beats getting paid to sit at the bottom of a ladder!! Back when I was working for a cabling company we were doing a job in Baltimore. We were cabling an old building and some of it had to be run from the outside. Someone walked off with two or three boxes of cat 6 cable. At the time it had just come out so it was crazy expensive. So I got paid for a week and half to sit out side and watch the cable and tools.

Some crackhead stole my spool of cable in San Francisco once!! He missed the $200 drill sitting next to it(I usually hid it under trash). I didn't get anything done that day!

While I was digging thru my truck to see what else is missing a person told me a homeless man was in my truck while I was in the house.
