Not in need of any canopies as I bought 3 from mphelis recently. I thought that I read you were having a hard time making a 1 piece polycarbonate canopy and were going to make a 2 piece from a donor. If you can't find a good donor, can you make a plug of the canopy half out of balsa or plaster? I was just curious.

"How many types of rotor head systems did John do ??? ,,, how many made it to market ????"

As far as I can recall:

The original Revolution head on the .40 (basically a Helibaby copy).

The larger version for the .60 (Revolution II).

The Revolution Commander head (copy of Heliboy head).

The "Rigid Rotor" flybarless head for the Commander. I still have a somewhat faded, gold anodized one of these.

The partially plastic version of the .40 sized head used on the Mantis.

A partially plastic version of the Commander head used on the Mantis (I think it had plastic blade axle bearing blocks.

That is all I can remember, and I am not sure about the last one.

Does MPhelis have the 1pc American Revolution 40 canopies available? If I could find a good donor Revolution 40 canopy I could make a 2 pc mold without any problem and is by far the easiest way to go. The one piece canopy that were on the originals would be hard to vacuum form. Making one from scratch is another subject entirely. To answer your original question if I have a canopy half available I can make a mold from it. If it is damaged or cut it turns into a different animal and takes a great deal more work. For example the Kobe Kiko Hughes 300 molds that I made took well over 100 hours of shop time to make and finish because they had been cut out and the bubble was cracked and damaged.

The canopy was kind of narrow from side to side. I'd guess that the mold was THREE piece with the center section coming out first. The canopies were very durable and made of smoke colored polycarbonate.

You got them all (that I can remember ) except the one that didn't make it to market . A 4 bladed somewhat faded, gold anodized head ,,, that I wanted so bad that I traded a contest winner Jet range fuse with his .40 size in it for one (well tried to ) !!!!
I had taken 2nd in the 89 Toledo expo scale static heli contest and he and his son wanted to buy it to display at other shows ... so I said replace the bird / fuse and 1- 4 bladed head . They both agreed... but then never came out with the 4 bladed head and eventually sent me a .60 commander instead of the head .Both John and John Jr were very generous guys when it came to the hobby and trying to promote it .
More than likely the head didn't fly well ,, as their 2 bladed FB didn't either . I think it was because of such low RPM's we ran with the wood blades back then ... and then add another 2 of probably the same length and the poor O.S. .40 probably could hardly turn it

Those were the good old days ---------- and a lot of good memories of those two

The "Rigid Rotor" flybarless head for the Commander. I still have a somewhat faded, gold anodized one of these.

There are at least two versions of this head and I have both still new. If the heads are compared side-by-side, looking at the way the feathering spindles are retained in the block and understanding the stresses and failure modes, the second head 'fixed' the apparent weakness of the first. Flying would have been tough for either one regardless. I wonder if the success of the Horizon 60 had any influence on Simone? Same era.

Larry - I was at Toledo in '89 but spent so much time talking to the different heli manufactures that I remember nothing of the static display. Purchased my first modern heli (X-Cell 60) from the swap-shop there. A couple months later managed to successfully learn to fly my much modified Du-Bro Hughes 300. Why not build and fly the X-Cell instead? I didn't want to risk breaking my new and sophisticated machine and didn't at that time possess a correct heli radio. Boy, what a major error in judgment that was

So many heli's - too little time...

Larry,

Glad I got most of them!

Heli_Headcase,

How do I identify the two different types of American R/C Rigid Rotor heads?

I did not know there were two different styles.

One of the things that I have been contemplating is to use the Rigid Rotor head on a Command I have been restoring, but with modern electronics for flybarless.

I have already built up a "normal" Commander head from the remnants of two, but flying that Rigid head would be kind of cool too.

Leave it to Heli headcase .... I didn't know about the two types of 2- bladed flybarless that John had . Mine flew ,,but did the death wobble and I didn't know enough then to up the RPM's ,, but it would stay air borne .

Back then without the internet ... you were lucky to know that the company was out there even !!!!

Here is a picture of the 4 bladed head ,,held by then main lady of John Jr.
These pictures were taken with a poloroid and they have started to go .So bear with me and my trip down nostalgia lane.

And a few of the boys and the American revolution jet ranger .40

To bad the photos are starting to go as you use to be able to see the magazine I had laying on the far seat !!!

And I need to aplogize to Steve ... it was 1978 not 89 ,,, time flys when you are having fun and getting old .. I found the plaque that I have keep to the trophy and it says 78

Still need a canopy.

This all good information but the John Simone American Revolution 40 still needs a canopy.

They are easy to spot: One piece, smoke color, kind of narrow from side to side, ie. not as round as a Bell 47 or Heli Baby.

Someone must have leftovers.
