I am using this controller on my Trex 600 electric. Head speed with throttle set at 57% with a DX7 is 1930. The instructions say not to go below 57% to prevent overheating. I am using a helical main gear with 188 teeth and and an 11 tooth pinion gear and the standard 1620kv motor. I am getting 4 1/2 minutes run time with a 6S 5000 pack. I would like a lower head speed to increase flight time.

I run this esc on my Raptor with 620mm blades.
10s a123
600kv motor
11:1 gear ratio
Flight times of around 8 minutes at 95% charge
I run the esc at 80% throttle
My thoughts are that you might try increasing the pack voltage, decrease the motor kv, depends what type of flying you are into. but I feel your gear ratio is a little high.
Perhaps some of the electric gurus can chime in.

you should reduce your pinion, so you can get the headspeed you want so you jazz can run at 80%.

Smaller pinion

The smallest pinion available is 10T, with the standard main gear produces the same results.

For spektrum unless you set your endpoints to 83/83 on the thr channel you will not be getting the % you think you are.

Either set to 83/83 or divide your 80% thr value by .83= 96%.

This is why commonly after 75% etc you do not see RPM increase at all!

Is this true for JR too? I seem not to get an increase in speed after about 60%.

kennethw,

I have used Jazz escs with Jr and Dx7 radio for a long time. I generally find that my Jazz escs govenor headspeed max's out at 85-88% throttle setting.

I usually start up in idleup 2 with a flat 100% throttle curve, let the rpm settle (in your case I would calculate it to be ~2100 rpm), then switch to Idleup 1 at say 75%. I find that this gives much more consistant results, esp when you are using different battery packs. I would expect that you would end up with a much higher setting than 57% to drop 200rpm HS, maybe something like 70-75%. You also might want to recalibrate your esc, by the usual stick method (mode 1 then mode 4) or by using the fixed endpoints with the prog card.

Also, your runtimes (4.5 min) seem pretty low for 1930 HS. I suspect your motor is the problem, and/or your heli mechanics are too tight (gear mesh, belt tension, etc).

One way to improve these runtimes is to get a better, more efficient motor and go to 10s 3700-4000 mahr packs with a Kontronik tango 45-08 motor (and say a 12-13t helical pinion). If you dialed down your hs to ~1800-1850, you would probably get at least 7.5 min runtimes.

However, if you want to stick with 6s, then maybe consider a Tango 45-10 motor, geared to ~170t straight main/15t pinion. I think you could dial this 6s combo down to ~1800-1850 and get at least 6 min runtimes.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,
TomC

Hi Tom,

Thanks for the tips.

BTW, I'm running 12S, but need to drop to 10S as it is not 'easy' to change the gear ratios since I'm doing this on a Electric Converted Raptor 50 using the old 'Hacker' method.

Also, I'm getting about 12 minute flight times at 1750RPM draining only 60%. It's 'rcflyer' (the Thread Starter) whom is getting the short flight times. I'm having problems setting up the Kontronik's.

My application, and reason for electric conversion, is a CCW 4-blade head and 4-blade tail on the left for scale.

Thanks.

Ken

Sorry Ken, Meant to address this note to rc2flyer, not you (my fellow HV comrade!). If you are having problems with low throttle curves, you might try the startup suggestions I gave him.

Cheers,
TomC
