Gasser Model RC Helicopters > Jewel connections with AR700 receiver?

I’ve just made a mounting to fit the Jewel generator on the 700G and I’m wondering how you are connecting it with the AR700, the Aux channel is taken up with the governor so the only channel free is the battery channel when I remove the Align regulator and that will be used for the NiMH pack, I guess you guys are using Y leads but what would be the best/safe way of doing it?
I’m going to need one for the Jewel and one for the Volt meter

Cheers

Y harness

Yes you can use a Y cable, put the switch lead after the battery into one end of the Y, put the Jewel into the 2nd end of the Y, and then plug in the other end of the Y into the battery port on the receiver.

This way both the jewel and the battery will feed together into the receiver and the jewel will back feed into the battery when the switch is on and disconnect the battery from the jewel when you land and shut the switch off.

Cheers Raja
I was hoping you would chime in with the correct way for connecting it; I just need to add another Y cable for the volt meter, where would you take that from? Aux1 is pitch and Aux2 is governor so I’m guessing it would be better taking it from Aux2.

From anywhere really

But you can take it from AUX2 no problem. If you take a voltmeter and check for continuety, I'm betting that you'll find that all the center pins in the receiver from thro to aux2 are connected together, and all the ground pins (black wire) are connected together. Only the signal pins are seperate.

For what it's worth, you can easily pop the red and black Jewel wires out of the connector, then simply plug them into the single wire gain connector from your gyro. Works great, no Y-cables either.

Excellent idea!

In the case of a gyro with a single wire for the gain it makes perfect sense to use those empty ports in the plug

That is a very good idea, with the DX7 you always end up not having enough channels
If only I could get the pins out without damaging them, hold on though I can cut the plastic away as I wont be using the connector

Don't cut!

Just lift the tab ever so slightly with an exacto knife tip or a pin and then pull the wire out from the plug. This way you can put it back into the plug later if you need to. When you pull the wire out note the orientation as it needs to go in the same way and not upside down, so it can click in and lock in the connector.

Make sure you put the red power lead in the middle, and the black ground lead on the outside of the connector. This has been working great for me for years.

Good idea about using the gyro gain to plug the 2 wires from the Jewel in to, I had heard something similar before...

...however with regards to a GY611, Futaba don't supply a gain wire with only the one cable, are the other 2 cables redundant or doing something?

Well first I have to say a big thanks to Raja for talking me through faultfinding with the Jewel and eventually helping me get it working again, he even made time to phone me in the UK.
Raja you are the Man

Futaba connector pins
Well try as I may I couldn’t get the little buggers out with a pin and If I had carried on I would have bent them or worse so I’ve carefully removed the plastic from around the pins so now I can plug them into the gyro plug and free up a channel for the volt meter.

Thanks for the tip Xcal

Yes and if I had read carpman's post properly I could have saved myself the trouble seen as I also run the 611

Hi Fixit

Does that mean you have pulled the 2 wires from the GY611 plug and put the Jewel into it? I guess it works?

No it means I had to find a new end for the Jewel after cutting if away because the 611 has three wires in the plug already like you said.

I was just wondering if the GY611 was actually using all 3 though or just a single gain wire?

I doubt they would install two wires they didn’t make use of but someone in the know might chip in and confirm that either way.
I hope they are redundant so I can free up a channel.

Hi Fixit

How do you end up wiring all this lot in?

Anyone care to comment about the GY611 gain wire does it use all 3 cable or just the signal?

Time to start tinkering with mine again, got a bit fed up with it so haven't flown for 3 weeks. Need to stop this tail doing its occasional letting go trick...
