Is that engine ok for a freya evo doing mostly FAI/F3C?
I can get that engine from a friend for free. Comp is good, and it has burned 20liters ( 5 gallons ).
Bearings is nice aswell.

And a good gear ratio for that engine? Is 95/12 going to work?

Thanks

I have the 91SX C-Spec in my Freya.

Great engine, although the Perry pump and 60M carb didn't allow the engine to run consistently for me.

I swapped the carb/pump setup for the one that came on the 91SZ-H PS.

The engine is very consistent and has adequate power for what I do (mostly 3D). Gearing is 12/95.

Mixture setting seemed sporadic... so from one week to the next I was adjusting the mixture. More annoying was the tendency for the mixture to lean out toward the end of the tank.

Back in the day prior to the release of the 91SZ, it seemed many were spending the money for the OMI cline setup.

Give the engine a go with the stock carb/pump. Recommend using a header tank. If it gives you trouble, bin the pump/carb. Either one of the 91SZ carbs will fit the SX.

The blue head C-spec with the pump/pump carb from the SZ is superb. Do not use the blue head from the SZ. One 0.008 inch head shim. If you want more power raise the exhaust about 0.035 inch.

With the exhaust raised you will have as much power as an SZ.

Neither the original 3 needle non-pump carb or the 2 needle pump carb with the return nipple will be satisfactory. (both go lean)

So what your saying is that the engine alone is not so good. You realy need the pump and the carb from the SZ ?

I've got 4 of those engines, all with VH's and Cline BB carbs and they run like scalded apes. What John is saying is that if you want max power out of a C-Spec do what he says but don't fret the small difference between the C-Spec and the SZ. The C-Spec will reward you with smooth power and a big smile on your face especially if you use the 60L carb off of a new HZ.

SZ carb from "ronlund" is $159
Viper head is around $100 ?
Then perhaps a new pump..

Os 91Hz new is $399

Perhaps better to get a new Hz..

Used 91SZ parts here.

EDIT:
there are some viperheads and OMI modified carbs listed in the classifieds as well...

The Viperhead is not necessary. It was designed when the gold head was the standard head. The blue pump engine head is very similar to the Viperhead.

The succession of heads in order of increasing combustion chamber volume is.

gold head
viperhead
original OS hyperhead
blue head
HZ head
SZ head

The Viperhead with the recommended thick and thin shim is similar to the blue head with one thick shim.

Ah..

So if I just get my hands on a SZ carb, this engine should be fine for some FAI/F3C type of flying?

Cheers
