I'm currently working on my latest E9 incarnation. I want to build this one so that it could be converted back to nitro without having to replace the entire frame.

Rather than build a heavy 1 piece aluminum motor mount that would provide enough support to keep the motor stable I'm working on a second frame set that will bolt to and overlap the upper portion of the main frame. The now smaller lighter motor mount will bolt to this as well as the main frame. The overlaying frame will also have provisions for securing the two 6s LiPo packs.

I'm estimating about 3-4 ounces total that I'll save as well as the ease of converting back to nitro simply by removing the motor mount and secondary frames with just a few bolts.

I know that this may be hard to picture, but I'll have the first set done in a few days and I'll post pics then.

In the mean time, any comments, thoughts, ideas........

I got the overlaying frames cut and installed last night. I'm using G10 for now but I'll switch to carbon once I figure out the final battery placement. So far everything looks good, and I really like that I only have to remove 10 bolts on each side and then drop a YS or OS in and its a nitro bird.

And yes it will be flybarless. That Bonta head has some of the most sensuous curves I have ever seen on a piece of machined aluminum.

After a quick mock-up last night the bird weighed in at over 14 lbs. It looks like I'm going to have to go with a single frame set-up, so I ordered some sheets of G10 from McMaster-Carr yesterday. The good news is that I had the length wise CG dead on, and I think I've got a way to bring the span wise CG much closer to center.

Well you have to love McMaster Carr. I paid for ground shipping and the G10 arrived overnight. I've got enough material to make 5 complete frame sets.

Chuck,

If you're interested, I might have to send you a set for testing.

Cool.. I am looking to do something different with it..

Have you looked at my old posts?.. not that i'm a genious.. see can't even spell it right huh?

We used the stock frames at first.. It worked fine..

Just didn't like how the packs mounted so i did this with some carbon, drill press, and a dremel tool..

I did all the flybarless stuff to try to take it eaiser on the packs.. old 20 and 25C stuff.. Now with the 45C cells from ThunderPower i think i'm going to go back to a flybarred version with a standard tail drive just to see how it does..

I really like the motor mount in the first pic, but I see a lot of room for flexing. The second pics looks closer to my latest design but I really think you're going to like what I've done.

Na it didn't flex.. Just the batteries had to sit too far to the rear
because of the low mounted motor..

If you take a close look at his design, you can see there is no where for the motor to flex.

I do like the second version much better on a cosmetic standpoint.

Thats funny you say that Helico... that was cobbed together and mostly cut out with a drill press and dremel tool..

I'm going back to a normal tail drive on my E Synergy.

The first set of frames are almost done. I just need to cut the slots for battery placement and then I can get started on the second set.

e9

I hate to tease you guys like this but I have been working on an e9 side by side with the N5. This will be a conversion kit with frames and motor mounting hardware. We are still testing the prototype but it's coming along very strong. Don't ask me about a release date.

Sincerely,

Matt

Very nice Matt.

When it eventually gets released will there be a kit available as well as the conversion kit?

Matt,

The only down side to what you've been working on is that it puts the CG to low in the frame. I'll have mine done later on this week and you'll see what I'm getting at. I don't have a CAD program so I'm doing everything by hand. Otherwise I'd post up some pics.

Foamy,

Compared to the N9, the vertical and horizontal CG is almost exactly the same. Solidworks has the ability to calculate CG based on assigned mass properties of each individual part/component.
I would highly suggest purchasing a copy or at least doing your CAD work over a friends house who has Solidworks. It takes much of the trial and error testing out of creating a prototype.
I'm sure your design is very ingenious, I'd love to see it when you are done. I can appreciate any ones desire and enthusiasm to create something new, its very rewarding.

Sincerely,

Matt

Hirobofreak,

I don't have much say in things like that but I'd venture to say if the demand is there for a full E9 kit then it will probably happen. You can also look at it like this.... someone can buy a used Synergy and convert it to an E9, it may even save you some money.

Sincerely,

Matt

I was not aware that solidworks could provide that info, and while the CG may be almost the same, with the electric conversion I was looking for an improvement. I guess after flying my Eagle 3 I got spoiled on how smooth that rolls with no mixing required what so ever.

If you take a look at the pics, I was able to keep the fore/aft CG the same while moving it closer to the rotor head to make rolls more fluid. The markings for the frames are where they will be cut out and the batteries will mount to the inside of the opposing frame to bring the left/right CG as close to center as possible.

I know that these look very crude at the moment, but this is just a prototype and entirely hand cut.

Looks like you have a good start on it! Awesome job!
Keep in mind the Eagle 3 has a lower CG and a higher boom than the Synergy N9. The N9 already has quite possibly the highest CG of any helicopter out there, this is not always a good thing, with a high CG you gain in some areas and lose in others. The Eagle 3 rolls very axial for many reasons other than vertical CG, the head design plays a large roll in its characteristics.

Have fun with the build, post some video when you are done!

Matt
