I have a Cricket I am trying to rebuild. I'd like to use the Super Tigre X.25 that was in it when I bought it used.

I made the mistake of not taking notes/photos during the disassembly of the engine to replace the bearings and do not have a parts diagram/exploded view.

My problem... new exploded diagrams show a crankshaft spacer between the front bearing and the step on the crankshaft/rear bearing. Does the X.25 have a spacer. I have an extra part which may be the spacer (fits the shaft, and is about the height of the step on the crankshaft), but I thought if was used in the Cricket drive train.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

The aluminum washer is just a spacer with a 1/4" (.250) I.D.
this fits behind the flywheel on most .21 - .32 engines.
please see Cricket pics in my gallery.

BlueThunder,

Thanks for the quick reply. However, I do not believer the part I am referring to is the 1/4" washer in the Cricket parts diagram (I do have the Cricket instruction book). The washer in the instruction book appears to be a standard 1/4" washer. It is possible my piece is being used instead of the the 1/4" washer (I originally thought it was the 1/4" spacer to fit behind the flywheel.

To describe it further, the part/piece I am referring to fits on the crankshaft of the Super Tigre X.25 and is almost exactly the same outside diameter as the step in the crankshaft (where it goes from the inside diameter of the front bearing to the inside diameter of the rear bearing). It is shiny/polished aluminum, and has a small bevel on the inside opening of one side of the spacer, which is about 1/2 the width of the spacer. Since it is the same diameter as the step in the crankshaft, It leads me to believe it may be the Super Tigre crankshaft spacer. Here is a photo.

That isn't the 1/4" washer is it?

Thanks for the help.

Mike,

I don't believe this washer to be used internal to the SuperTiger X25.
This washer may fit under the engines drive washer (Prop Hub) or it was used in addition to the GMP Cricket's spacer washer for additional spacing installed in front of the prop hub before adding the GMP spacer washer.

That "washer" goes on the front of the crankshaft, inside the motor, and is a spacer between the front of the crankshaft and the rear of the inner race of the front bearing.

The chamfered side goes toward the crankshaft...

The thrust washer/prop drive fits on the front of the crankshaft, and is held in place by a split cone.

If you don't put that spacer inside the motor, it's going to bind up something fierce when you try to tighten down the nut on the end of the crank.

Yes, that X-25 of mine spent many hours on the front of a 25-sized Dirty Birdy, a plane that I finished building in June 1984, and that with a little TLC, will fly again. The X-25 would be once again up-front, but the top end of the conrod is a bit stretched. If I could locate a good rod, I'd put it back in service.

BTW -- the piston has a pin in it to locate the ring gap. If the front of the crank shaft is 12 o'clock and the rear of the crankcase is 6 o'clock, the piston is installed correctly if that pin is at about the 7 o'clock position.

Dave,

Thanks so much. Your spacer looks just like mine. I was pretty sure of the location, assuming it had a spacer. Now that I know that is the spacer, I'll reassemble the engine correctly and see if I can get it to run. And next time I'll take photos as I take it apart.

If you can't get it to run, make me a real deal on the conrod if it's in good shape...the one in mine got stretched at the top end by perhaps one too many lean, high speed vertical down lines in my younger days.

Dave,

I actually got it running today. I need to spend more time getting the carb adjusted, but it ran.

You might be able to get a new crankshaft by e-mailing pete of pete of peteshobbies.com. His e-mail address is petesrc@aol.com. His inventory varies. I recently got a gasket set for the X.25.

Sorry I can't help with the crankshaft. Best of luck.

Thanks for the tip. That motor hasn't been in production for about 25 years now. Pete must have one heck of a back room in that hobby shop.

I had contacted Pete regarding the crankshaft spacer and asked for a parts list. He said his inventory is constantly changing so he doesn't have one. He asked that I just check when I need parts and he'll let me know if he has them. I think he just keeps an eye out for parts he knows he can resell.
