Looks to me like the canopy is in one peace, the white bit are most likely whats left of the rotor blades. Too bad the cameraman couldn't keep it together longer enough to film the aftermath.

If the wings are traveling faster than the fuselage, it's probably a helicopter.

So as he gave it more HS the blades got closer and closer to the boom..until..BOOM

That would mean that if you are in idle-up one and bring the collective stick all the way down (while the heli is on the ground or not) it will explode? (with a properly setup machine, that is...)

I've seen pilots doing that inadvertently but the heli never exploded...

There is something more to it...

Most likely would. In this case it was alot easier because of the flimsy wooden blades and plastic grips..prabably stock (soft) dampners as well.

I belive what you see is people bringing down the collective slightly to make the smoke shoot up through the blades, I do it all the time as do most the people I fly with..it looks neat but we are by no means giving it more than a few degrees of negative pitch.

EDIT: It doesnt explode in the air because as you give it negative pitch the heli moves with it..However on the ground the only thing negative pitch will do is push the blades twards the heli.

So, the issue is not that it was on the ground, but poor blades, grips or dampers and reversed collective...

Even with the proper collective it would have happened in the air, when he eventually went inverted... yes?

nope. whether your inverted or right side up when you are in the air when you give it negative the heli moves with it. Granted it will push the blades closer to the heli it will still only push them so far until the helii starts moving in that direction...On the ground the only thing that will happen is the blades will get closer and closer to the boom.

It would be cool to send the guy with the Raptor 90 in the living room the video of the Raptor 50 exploding.

THAT would give him some goosebumps, I'm sure!

Could it have been way too lean to cause that? It sure did not look like it had very much smoke coming from it.

Anyone for ground induced oscillation? That baby is really screaming, he's firmly planted on the ground, and for a few seconds before the heli explodes from a boom strike, you can see the entire rotor disk begin to go way out of track.

Just before the thing starts to go nuts, he's backed off on power, then applied it abruptly.

This is video that explains very well why you don't tie your heli down to a ladder to run it up....

well for being what seemed to be a new pilot to the hobby, he surely was way to close to the heli, and I'm no safety cop that's for sure.

Na,put the Popcorn away, I have Mini airs, Raptors and Trexs they all have their good and bad points. All brands of helis will explode if the right conditions are met. Just my 3 cents.

Damn that ground is hard!
