I have a Vibe 90 SG kit on the way and I am going to see what ideas or experiences you all have for building and modifying(if needed) for this airframe to be F3C worthy.

I am just starting with F3C so I will be focusing on Class I for a little while.

So far this is what will be available to me.

Vibe 90 SG
Rotortech 720mm Scott Grey FAI blades
Rotortech FAI paddles
JR 8717 servos x4
Specktrum 7100R receiver
Outrage 5000mah 7.4v Rx pack
OS .91HZ-PS or OS .91 HZ(no pump)
Funtech .91 pipe
spartan Gyro
futaba bls-251 tail servo
tail blades (not sure yet, carbon I assume?)

So lets start the fun

a few changes I would do if it were my machine

you might want to move over to 700mm FAI SG blades since they are probably better suited to the head (I think this is what Scott Gray uses on his ASG head on the Sylphide, but someone needs to verify).

I would use JR 8317 servos instead for cyclis running a regulator to them (as Scott does on his machines). 8717 are more for 3D. 8317's are more suited to FAI since they have more precision.

And I'd try Funtech paddles since I've heard they're very good.

Okay so in my search for the 8317's I found that they are discontinued now. so is there a replacement of sorts? I would hate to be stuck with something new that doesn't have parts in the future.

Hmm. the 8317 are discontinued... hmmmm.. Well you could always go for the new brushless MP80... but no one I know has them yet, but they should be good.

Scott uses the 720mm blades with the ASG head, not the 700. Actually the whole reason Scott uses that head was so he could fly the 720's without overlap.

Also stick with the RT paddles.. they are designed to work with the RT blades... my heli did funny things when I didnt have the RT paddles... the RT stuff seems to work best as the complete set...

Also, depending on when you are ready... you might want to wait for the new OS HZ that has the OS version of the Cline reg... I have not been happy with my pumped HZ.

Also if you want a really quiet pipe and pretty good power check out the K&S 1888 its a lot like the funtech. And also the one Scott used up until this years Worlds. (FYI, the K&S pipe is available from AdvantageHobby, they just dont list it on their site for some reason)

You can also get the JR 7000t gyro (they are still available from Japan) and is really one of the best heading hold gyros for FAI stuff out there even though its older technology.

thanks for correcting me Joe.

I never got round to measuring the ASG head to see if I could swing 720s on them. I have yet to try the head and Rotortech blades, have to make do with SAB 208 on normal Sylphide head.

I'm waiting for that OS engine too. Don't want to use the YS long strokes.

If the K&S 1888 is a lot like the Funtech, why not just use the Funtech? It is the Funtech 382 we are talking about isn't it?

Well when I said its a lot like the Funtech... I meant in looks... I have no idea on performace... however, K&S always makes such good stuff, I figured you couldnt go wrong with it. I think they're the same price...

strangely enough that's the 3D one you quoted. The F3C one is the 1887.

But knowing K&S they'll probably discontinue them both and force us to go for the 2376 which IS a Funtech muffler.

As two of the three members of the US WC team can attest, the RT blades work very well with FT paddles.

You should fly both and see which ones you prefer. While Scott's overall set up is perfect for Scott and his supreme flying skills, it is indeed naive to copy his entire set up and think every aspect of it will suit your tastes and skill set. We all used to smile at FAI newcomers who used to try to copy Curtis's FAI set up from a decade ago. NO ONE, and I mean NO ONE, could make that set up work like Curtis. Working within a set of parameters with which seasoned pilots here would be happy to provide and who have countless hours of FIRST HAND flying experience with the products they suggests will go a long way towards having your model fly as you want.

And BTW, if you could ask Mr. Ito what gyro he was flying in his WC models, you might be surprised at his reply......

So Ben.... What gyro was Ito using in his World's machine? Wasnt it a Spartan?

I absolutely agree that you need to fly stuff to see if it works. My comment about the paddles wasnt directed at the FT paddles, I was just saying that I felt the RT blades performed the best and flew the easiest with the RT paddles and that they were worth a shot.

I see what you are all saying. And just to clarify something, those items I listed, are the items I already have on hand to work with, so I am trying to do this without purchasing really what I already have. Eventually i may switch things up in the future to see what works better for me and so forth. I think the only other item that I will be purchasing is the heavy weights for the flybar and the super gracy sometime down the line. I figure I really won't need the fuse while in class I

I heard some rumours that Mr. Ito gyro was silver, blue and the size of a postage stamp.

Subscribed to this thread as me too setting up a SG for 3C but I am as green as

I saw a pic of Ito's W.C. machine and I could not believe my eye. Though in the spec. published by the magazine was g7000t but the blue emblem was unmistakeable. Could not be sure it was a 520 but... Shocking! Could not believe my eye!!!
