Hey All,

Wouldn't mind some help with troubleshooting a crash that happened today with my mini titan as I am bot baffled.

In a nutshell:
Did 3 flights w/o any issues after installing brand new HK-2221-8 and scorpion ESC. Just circuits, no 3D yet.
On the 4th flight, started in a hover, switched to idle up, climbed to 30 feet before hearing a loud noise, heli spinned a couple of times before dropping like a stone. Happened too quickly to even go throttle hold.

Damage result:
Bent main shaft and flybar + few other links
Main and tail blades ok
Battery tray ejected
Lipo looks like it imploded (almost folded in the center)
Main gear stripped (one tooth out)
Gyro was loose after the fact

First thought is a defective lipo as I clearly lost all power by the time the heli hit the ground. Was a brand new one (first flight) and was damaged after the fact but it may have been as a result of hitting the concrete.

Other thoughts?

If the main gear was stripped, that seems like it was under power when it hit.
When it started to spin out of control was the motor making noise but not driving the mainshaft?
Oneway bearing maybe went out on you?
Oneway if it goes out on you can turn into a "two way" that will drive the main gear and tail but not the mainshaft.
Have you inspected your oneway and the sleeve it rides on?

@Melnic: Can't recall much at that point. I don't believe it was though.
I removed the gear assembly shortly after the crash and haven't inspected it into many details. What should I be looking for?

@fenderstrat: Belt is intact and so is the tail assembly...

I have Trex 450 clones and an e550 so I'm not 100% familiar w/ the e325 but someone else can chime in.

For my oneway bearings, I'd look at the sleve it rids on and I could see how the sticking OWB would grove down the sleeve. I'd have metal shavings/metal dust in the OWB.

I have not had a similar problem (one way or otherwise) in over 300 flights on my MT.

After reading your description, did you switch to idle-up during the first 3 flights?

If not, it sounds like your ESC and/or Lipo may be to blame. MANY people have had problems with Scorpion ECS's so that's the first thing I'd suspect. That 2221-8 rocks but is very power hungry too.

I'd would try a Castle 45 ESC for the next flight(s).

@Melnic: After further inspection, seems like the one way is fine, clean and doing what it is supposed to... in doubt though, I just ordered a new set. Will rebuild the whole setup with gears from scratch.

@Dave: Yes, all 3 flights were in idle up. I am also suspecting a problem with the ESC/Lipo although the lipo is still my main culprit since it looked almost folded. Not sure that a drop from that height could cause something like this. ESC would be more problematic as I was planning on putting it back and giving it a shot since there is no apparent damage and it did operate well (at least for a while). A call to scorpion may be a good idea just in case.

@fenderstrat: possible but wouldn't explain the loss of power...After the crash all the swash links were popped off not broken.

The most embarrassing part was that right before flying, a dude pulled over a few feet away facing me, directly in the front of the heli (I am flying in the parking lot of a navy base... lots of space). After gesturing that I wouldn't take off until he drove behind me, which he did btw, parking next to me to watch the flight. Turned out to be a short flight For lack of better explanation it felt as if someone has jammed a stick in the gear.

Ok.

I mentioned the ESC or battery because when you said:

"On the 4th flight, started in a hover, switched to idle up, climbed to 30 feet before hearing a loud noise, heli spinned a couple of times before dropping like a stone. Happened too quickly to even go throttle hold."

That's exactly what I did on my 2nd flight at IRCHA with my Logo 500 and it seems that my older (80+ cycle pack) could not handle the load of a full throttle punch-out and so about 30' up the ESC went into a soft-start condition and the heli just dropped. The only difference is I don't remember hearing a loud noise.

My full power punch-outs have been measured with my Eagle Tree at 103+ amps.

I only use that pack for hovering/warm up now and save inverted/3D for my good packs.
