Fliers,

I've been flying an Sceadu EVO 50 for 6 months. It's a great heli that I like so much. It fill up all my needs (I'm not a 3D flyer, just enjoy fly helis doing circuits, loopings, rolls).

But a friend of my is interested on buying my Sceadu and I see this as an opportunity to upgrade to a SDX.

After 6 months since the SDX launch, I ask: is it a reliable/mature machine? Does it perform as its adds?

Regards.

Flight performance-wise, the model has met and exceeded all expectations. The control system is superb.

The stock blade grip/drag bolts are a bit too soft, but harder ones are easily obtained. Every once in a while the auto bearing will start to slip, but they're inexpensive, and the failures are NOT frequent.

That's about it. These models are high quality, easy building, long lived, and great flying.

Get one. I double damn guarantee you love it.

I've been flying my SDX for about almost EVERY Sundays since it was launched here in Manila. I fly mild 3D and about 3-4 tanks per flying day.

So far I have no major issues with it except for the stock drag bolts that gets bent. I've replaced it with the hardened ones but still the hardened ones bends a little.

Normal wear could be seen on the wash-out base (black residue on the main shaft), stock gears and normal vibration wear near the engine mounts and skids rubber dampers, which may have been avoided if I was more meticulous in re-tightening the screws and bolts.

Only ugly truth about the skids are that the rear end sags and remains that way.

The fun part flying the SDX (compared to my old Sceadu Evo) really drowns all the above qualms of mine. I admit flying it more often than my bigger Freya Evo, EX2 and Eagle3 machines and has become my real favorite heli.

The SDX retains what the old Shuttle, Sceadus and other Hirobos have in common: longevity and reliability. Wear is low and I think this heli will stay in the market as long as their predecessors did.

i'm flying one of the first batch uk sdx50 kits
i've never had a problem with it and it flies great
its just the same as my 8 year old non-evo sceadu fill and fly, fill and fly, fill and fly etc but don't forget to charge the rx batteries when your having fun flying it

and the only mod i've done is fitting the sceadu skid set as i didn't like the look of the sdx ones

one happy sdx50 owner

I have 5 gallons through my completely stock SDX. After the first couple flights I would go through the entire machine to check for loose parts. I Never found any so now I fuel and fly, fuel and fly. The Hirobo support may be the best part.

I am very thanked, I was between SDX - VIBE50 and TREX600N cause of the cheap parts and finally made the better choice in my opinion... buy my SDX, awesome heli with no problem after many many flights.

SDX Kits

I picked up my current kit at the beginning of Sept and have had NO problem with the bolts at all.... and I am running MAH 600's at 2100hs....no problems at all..... this is one FUN heli!!!!!! It makes you want to "stir" the sticks and gives you the confidence to do it and have everything you need to pull out of about anything you can give it.....and that is NEW FOR ME!!!!!!!!!!
This is one GREAT HELI......

I have to thank Hirobo for making my life here at work easy. I don't get any phone calls about "this needs to be fixed" or "why did they disign it that way?".

Hirobo takes longer to come out with new models becasue they test and test and test BEFORE then come out with the helicopter. (unlike some other brands).

The SDX is the way to go if you are thinking about a new 50.

Bone Stock SDX

I run a bone stock SDX and I went 80 flights without any issues until I drove it into the ground. I never had to change a single part and I fly pretty hard.

The first quality I noticed about the SDX is the way it tracks. It's a real enjoyment to fly and instills confidence. I have friends with Knight 3D's and they switched to the SDX because it's quicker. My good friend that's an FAI type pilot really enjoys my SDX too. The SDX accommodates all types of pilots.

Price is competitive compared to its competitors and you're getting Japanese quality. I've had Chinese metal and plastic parts fail on me before and I was sick and tired of it.

Sceaudu is a great machine but the SDX is a shrunken version of the Turbulence

I've flown my SDX since they came out, every weekend and have not had any drag bolt issues at all.

My Headspeed is 1950 - 2000 and I've flown MAH and SAB Red Devil blades.

The MAH blades are quite aggressive and I've had zero issues with the machine in any way.

I just started flying mine. I have 6 tanks in her so far. I am not liking the landing gear it is very flimsy. I may change to either the EX or freya landing gear. I have the freya gear on my evo 50. Very strong.

Best flying 50 I've ever owned/flown. I've had or have the following 50's to put that statement in perspective: Raptor 50 SE, Raptor 50 Titan SE, Vibe 50, T-Rex 600N and 600E, SDX. I've flown just about all other recent 50's on the market including the Velocity 50.

The SDX can be adjusted to fly as you like from wildly quick and nimble to ultra-stable. The choice is yours without having to buy any upgrades. I did upgrade to the Delrin main gear for added strength since I'm running the NovaRossi Rex57 (2.4 HP). I also installed 3D tail feathers.

Only caveat about the performance is weight. The model is slightly heavy for a standard 0.50 c.i. engine if you plan to do serious 3D. I tried the TT Redline 53 first and it flew OK, but the sticky carb problem made me get rid of the 53. The YS50 was far too anemic to have much 3D fun. The Rex57 is perfect.

As for reliability, I got one of the early kits and have been flying it for a while at about a gallon per week. Besides the main gear which was replaced just for peace-of-mind, I have replaced one link ball at the tail bellcrank and the tail pitch slider. The YS caused some excess vibration in the tail and the ball wore out. My early kit had the press in brass bushing and it got sloppy. The new kits come with the thread on a bushing for the slider. I heard the newest kits come with hardened main blade bolts.

I agree with Ben, it's hard to be disappointed buying the SDX. If you like your Sceadu, you will love the SDX. It is a more mature version of the Sceadu. Hirobo kept what was good on the Sceadu and changed only what needed to be.

If you fly where the landing area may not be very level, get replacement landing gear. The stock gear allows too much bouncing. Less than perfect autos can result in tip-over. If you are using certain servos (Futaba BLS for example), you will need spacer plates.

Well said Rex.

On a power section note... I'm currently running the standard 50 Hyper engine on an Aling pipe. Although its running pretty strong... it doesn't compare to my buddys SDX with an 55 Hyper and Funteck pipe. The power on his machine is a nite and day difference from his to mine.
