e-BEAM Beam E4 > power loss?

My Beam fell out of the sky today. I'm not exactly sure what happened. The other day, I had to rebind the receiver as I wasn't getting a response at all. I don't remember doing anything unusual previously, only hovering and trying not to crash.

Today, I took out the Beam for a couple of packs hovering when in mid-flight I suddenly started to lose headspeed fast at about 30 feet up. I couldn't save the heli and down it went. When I picked up the bird, there was still power to the servos. My 2200 mah battery only has 5 cycles to it and I put 1150 mah back into it after the crash.

After I fixed up the heli and reconnected the battery to the ESC the receiver didn't turn on. I had to rebind the rx again. What could've happened? Is it the receiver? My Dynam 40A ESC? It can't be the DX6i tx since it worked just fine with other helis..

Thoughts?

Loss of power sounds like the ESC. What motor, and servos are you running? What are the specs on the BEC for that ESC?

Sounds like you might have one of the old school spektrum recievers that were prone to restarting if they had an overcurrent situation. What reciever do you have? I would do some research on this issue. Lot of people crashed with those rx's from what I hear.

I need one of those to fly in my office. Tried to fly my .90 in there but man is my wife pissed now!

I have an AR6110e receiver. I haven't had a chance to fly again to check if the problem persists.

Alright, well I did a little research about the rx in question, it's the AR500's but someone did pipe up about having the problem with the 6110e. Here's the thread. Might be worth a call to the good ol' Horizon boys.

I just got back from flying this morning. It maybe the ESC but I don't know. I was practicing hovering (that's all I really know how to do right now) about 50 feet up when I started losing power and the motor cut out 3 min into the battery. It's the third flight on the heli without a break.

I managed to land the heli safely (my first auto! unintentional but I'll take it). The receiver was still on and I still had servo controls.

The battery was not warm at all but the ESC was too hot to touch. After a few seconds I'd regain power and be able to hover a few inches before the motor dies out again.

On a whim, I swapped in an 1800 mah 20C e-flite battery and I was able to hover for 6:00 min without any problems. The ESC was hot but not too hot to touch like before. The battery was pretty warm though. I was using Outrage 2200 mah 25C batteries previously.

So I'll swap in Phoenix 45A ESC to see if the problem goes away. I had to rebind the receiver again this morning though. I did the same thing last night and all I was doing was trying to level the swash and checking the pitch. I don't know why it keeps losing the bind...

I forgot to answer Griffin, I'm using DS285MG servos. I couldn't find any info on the Dynam ESC BEC except that it'll take 3S LiPos with 4 servos.

After reading my first post or two, I don't even know what I was thinking. I must have been drinking lol. Sounds like you're on the right track with the ESC.

Without much detail (motor, gear ratio, etc), I will guess that your T-C is below 70-80%. If you plan on hovering only, I would suggest you up the T-C to about 80-90% and reduce the pinion of the head speed is too high.

Generally, ESC aren't too happy running at less than 70-80% and would heat up and run less efficiently.

If you have scorpion 2221-6, there isn't much you can do with pinion as you can't go smaller. But any other motor, you should be able to run down to 11T pinion and run higher T-C (throttle curve) and ESC will be much happier. If the ESC has a safetly thermal cutoff, that could be it.

Ideal T-C for normal mode is 0 inh X% inh (x+5)% that means the T-C from neutral to full is almost flat.

Yes my throttle curve was running less than 80% when I fly. I didn't know ESCs don't perform well under a certain TC percentage. That's nice to know. I have a 2221-8 with a 13t pinion. I'm gonna amp up the curves and see how that goes.

I assumed that you were using -8 motor. If you are learning to hover and forward flights, I suggest using 11T pinion and run it near 100%. Later on, you can up the pinion to increase the head speed. You will discover that your ESC runs much cooler.

very good information! while im not running a scorpion system... i think this could benefit me in the long run. I'm gonna give an 11t pinion a shot on mine. I run mine at around 60-70% right now. (higher kv). Thanks Justin's dad
