Chad, look at what is being used on the higher performance GoPeds, and you will see the challenge heli muffler designers face. The least offensive muffler is probably the MA Tuned muffler/header combo.

The new Bergen gas muffler works great. It's easily as quiet as the one I have on my MA Gas, a whole lot quieter than the stock muffler on a Z230 and seems to work better in the midrange.

Have a Z230 set up to hover at 1600 RPM. Took that muffler off, put the Bergen on and tacked at 1800 RPM.

Bergen muffler

I was thinking about the bergen muffler, but one of my buddies is having a problem with the mounting of the muffler, the mounting studs and bolts keep coming loose, I know I dont want another problem. Any other?

Thanks

My Bergen has stayed tight since I installed it (+20 flights). I put Locktite on the studs and used the lock washers - worked fine (vrs, the Bisson which came loose every flight).

Maybe a Bergen rep could jump in here and comment.

Use high temp LocTite on the studs and nuts and a light coating of high temp gasket sealer on the mating surfaces.

I have 5-6 gallons through mine since the last rebuild with no signs of coming loose.

The muffler coming loose can be a sign of unresolved vibration issues.

I have run both the Bergen and the MA mufflers. They are about the same db level. The Bergen has a smoother sound and produces more power. The MA sounds a bit brassier and doesn't produce the same power.

Here's an idea if you want a very quiet exhaust. Try to add a secondary muffler. Start with the MinAir 4030 (or the Bergen, are these the same unit? I'm not sure). Then use some hi-temp silicone tubing and link the output of the 4030 to another muffler for additional quieting.

Be sure that the secondary muffler does add undue back pressure.

No, I haven't tried this, I'm just thinking with my fingers. I could imagine a second muffler below the first one, there is room for it!

As to an intake silencer, the carburator (and intake) actually contribute to a lot of noise. You need some sort of silencer for that also, but one that does not restrict airflow. A tough challenge!

Also, remember you are adding weight with each modification.
