ive just bought the 401 9254 combo, because im on 2.4ghz im gonna upgrade my flight pack from 4.8v to 6v as people say its safer for 2.4 gig ive also bought an inline regulator to keep voltage to my tail servo to 5.1v max as ive heared these sevos dont like 6v, can i expect my batt to drain quicker with the reg and digital servo added? thanks,colin

I haven't heard anything about draining your batteries more going that route. Your servos will have a quicker response though, but the tail will be the same unless u change the piro rate.

That all depends on what brand of 2.4 you are using. The Spektrum brand is the only one that has a brown-out/crash problem and it’s mainly with the older receivers.

I have upgraded from Spektrum to Futaba FASST and have never had any more problems. I can now run everything off my 5v BEC and don’t have to use a step down for the rudder. Anytime you can eliminate components you increase reliability.

Depends on the capacity of the pack, you need to learn to check your packs regularly with a loaded volt meter.

To answer your question, a digital servo will draw more power than a non-digital servo, and a 6 volt system will draw more power than a 4.8 volt system.

In a real world sense though it shouldn't make that much difference and if the battery you get is of sufficent capacity you won't have any problems.

A 3S LiPo and CC BEC is the best. You can program to any voltage and a 3S LiPo will not drop low enough to cause a brown-out. 2s LiPo’s can drop to 6v or less under load and can cause problems.

I tried a 3S lipo and CC BEC and it caused brownouts on the bench. I also tried a few different sized lipos (from 2S to 4S) and a few different helis (from 450s to 90s) with the same results. It is the only BEC I have ever tried which I could consistantly cause brownouts on my RXs while playing with them on the bench. CC BEC is junk and there are plenty of better options available IMO.

I did use some 3S packs from a Trex 450 and a 6 volt Hercules BEC in my Raptor 30 for quite a while with great results. I was also running the 401/9254 and used a cheap Align step-down to drop the voltage going to the tail.

I use Western Robotics BEC’s my self but I heard that the CC BEC was cheaper but if it doesn’t work then I will only recommend Western Robotics BEC’s in the future.

i have been using a futaba 2.4 gig tx rx on 4.8v 4 cell 2700mah nimh receiver pack with onboard led voltage indicator, but because im upgrading the servo and gyro thought it would be a good idea to move up to a 5 cell 6v pack nimh 3300mah giving better operating voltage for the receiver and servos, though im gonna put a 5.1v inline reg just to the tail servo, do you guys think this set up will be ok? i was able to get 4 to 5 12min flights on my old set up before the batt checker started to show low volts, but ive never had it go into failsafe. thanks colin {heli is rap 30 nitro}

if a system is safe, it will also be in two tendencies of operation. I would never trust a system that gives me more safety in the 6V voltage operation. On the other hand, regard to servos, with bigger voltage they will have more force and better speed, but they will have also bigger consumption. Digitals have bigger consumption than non-digitals. As more appliances you add in your onboard equipment, more battery consumption you will have. Always, you have to check your onboard battery pack with a onboard volt meter. If you don't have one, put one on as soon as possible!!
