I've nearly finished my Wren 44 / Trex700 build.

The 44 manual suggests putting an air filter on your tank vent to keep out dirt and dust.

I've not seen anyone do this. Maybe it's being over caucious, but I'm thinking that's not a bad idea!

I've never seen air filters for helis - (only nitro trucks),
so where could I get an air filter, or would a fuel filter be good enough?

i can't find anything specific with the few turbine dealers I use (in the UK)
all I can see are these large filters used in nitro trucks;

That's an interesting idea. If you wanted to do so you could easily use Festo filters for that purpose. They are designed to filter pneumatic air as well as fluids. They are clear and it's easy to see the element to inspect what's in there.

.....thats just silly. Use a couple of different micron filters on the fill line and a simple center line UAT type tank. I have been flying turbines now since 1997 and turbine helis since 2003 and have NEVER put any type of filter on the breather / overflow line.

Filters

The picture below is an extract from the Vario Hughes 500E turbine assembly instructions. This process is used in all Vario turbine scale fuselage instructions. This is the best way to keep fines out of your fuel tank and prevent Kerosene bacterial growth in the tank. This is the number one cause of plugged fuel nozzles in turbines. Notice there is one filter on the fill line and one on the vent line. You should also use a filter after the fuel pump to catch any debris from the pump itself deteriorating. The felt filter clunk should be used in the header tank only to break up air bubbles to assure bubble free fuel to the engine. The felt filter clunk cannot be the final filter as it does shed some fibers which will really plug up the fuel nozzles. Any filters installed after the fuel tank should be mounted vertically with flow up through the filter in order to carry any air bubbles in the filter away on initial start-up. Horizontal or downward flow through a final filter should be avoided since it can cause flame out as fuel flow is increased during take off or a maneuver.

If you had the option,where is the best place to locate the fuel tank for a turbine engine.above the engine or below the engine?or does it not matter.Are there any additives to prevent bacteria build-up?

It does not really matter where the fuel tanks are relative to the height of the turbine as the pump will modulate to give the proper fuel flow to maintain set rpm. You should place fuel thanks centered for and aft relative to the main shaft to keep cg constant as fuel is consumed. In the case that fuel tanks are positioned above the turbine, it is very important the fuel tanks are kept empty when the turbine is not being operated to prevent fuel siphoning into the engine.

Additives are available just search the net.
