| if the HBK2 is still the "heli to beat" as far as parts availability, ease of flight (for novices) and general coolness...

Hmm, well I'm not entirely certain the HBK2 was ever any of those things. Having come from the horrific Blade CP, many of us thought it was the best thing since sliced bread. But as we progressed and the plastic wore, our options changed. As it stands now, most of the original HBK2 forum members have moved on to better helis, but still frequent this little corner of the internet.
There's a few of us left, most have converted over to the V3 which has much better tail and a nicer canopy. Lots of other little things as well.
The trend these days seems to be toward the cheap Trex 450 clones. There are lots clones around which are cheaper and far better than the HBK2 ever was. While I can see the value, have mix feelings about the blantent intellectual property infrigements. One thing you can say about the HBK2 is that is not Trex rip-off. Apart from the IP issues, that's not nessarily a good thing.
I still have my HBK now mostly made of V3 parts along with a Scorpion motor, CC ICE ESC, metal geared digital servos, a 9257 on the tail and a CF frame. I still fly it more than any of my other helis, but that's mainly because I can fly it in the backyard.
