They are made from heavy card stock, and plywood parts.

The card stock is cut to the dimensions given in the plans, then rolled inside those balsa exhaust blocks in the picture above. That gives them the basic shape. Then you fit that oblong rolled paper tube into the plywood oblong former rings. Thats those big rings you see on that plastic model's exhaust

a little white glue on the paper seam makes it permanent, then a little glue on the ply rings to fit them permanently onto the paper "tube". then the little detail pieces go on. You see those lateral stiffener bars on the side, those are plywood too, they get glued on. I'll have pix of that in a bit

oops I have the exhaust flipped around backwards, you should be able to see the stiffener rails going laterally on the exhaust diffuser. Just look at the model picture and thats how it should be

Don't want to hijack jzanutto's thread, but after receiving my AH-1W Super Cobra kit yesterday, I couldn't resist letting you all know that it's a beautiful kit, well executed by Dr. Tim Dawson of Dawson Approach Engineering.

He took the conversion of the AH-1F Cobra kit by Dave Blum and turned it into a new offering for us Cobra fans. I'll be building off-line and feeding any suggestions I come up with to Dr. Tim for his consideration for downstream kit revisions. I really don't expect to find many if any problems knowing Dr. Tim's meticulous attention to details.

You have to have this capability to be a retired U.S. Navy carrier pilot like Tim. Just lucky he and I didn't try to occupy the same airspace at the same time back in the late 60's, early 70's in SE Asia. I would like to thank Tim for allowing me to be one of the three people to get pre-release Whiskey Cobra kits. It's a true builder's kit and reminds me of my scale plank days, cut, sand, cover and fly.

Cheers - Boyd
