I think QWW

were buliding a heli to take a 4 stroke motor.looks like that motor could be fitted to a lot of nitro heli,s,the gearing would be the stumbling block as they tend to run at much lower revs but usually have lots of low down grunt(torque)

I'd love to see one of the twins "gasified"...

well, you should of course work on what you want to work on.

but these glow motor conversions come out every coupla years. The results always seem to be the same. There isn't enough cooling surface area on the motors to support the higher heat generation of gasoline or related fuels. They work in airplanes because of the enormous amount of air moving over the fins. But they haven't been very successful in helicopters, just search back through the RR archives for data.

The fact that this is a 4 stroke leads me to believe it will be even more problematic because the lower RPM turns the fan even slower. Historically even the glow versions of 4 strokes have been marginally successful, they just run too hot. KCORDELL was one of the more succesful users having campaigned them for several years, I suspect he can chime in about his experiences with 4-strokes. They sure sound great but are tricky to make work consistently. Maybe if you put some additional electric fans on the model you might overcome the heat but then the complexity level is starting to get silly.

I think I saw an OS conversion somewhere where they basically redesigned the motor with much more cooling surface. THAT might be the ticket to make these conversions work in helicopters.

As you say Carey

Cooling does seem to be a major headache with this type of motor.Be interesting to see how the QWW heli pans out with the Saito motor fitted.

That would be a cool engine on a plank, but not in a heli. Have you ever flown a Saito on a plank? They vibrate HARD. It makes a cool sound, but the vibration is intense. The torque is intense too, but that is only good because you don't have any reduction gears on a plank.

Now a boxer 4-stroke twin would be another story...

I've seen one of these fly. Peter Wales here used to have (may still). It sounded very cool. As I recall the motor didn't behave, one cylinder was always out of tune. I think there were some durability issues with the chassis too which is made by Vario.

Man did it sound good though.

Not my experience. They have a torque kick at low speeds because you are firing every other stroke like any four would. I would say they are smooth at running speeds. However, a four stroke is going to have much less power than a two stroke of the same displacement which is why I want to see it in a twin version. I would think a single cylinder 20 will end up being a dog for 90 size heli.

That motor would only work on a .50 sized heli. It is a very heavy motor without much power. It can't really 3D a plank. It is used mostly for scale airplanes.
