I have been following some of the discussions about the Honda GX31.
I also want to experiment with this engine for heli use. Does anyone know of a basic way to accurately measure the horsepower of an engine on a test stand?
Can the GX31 be use in a verticle shaft configuration without modifications to the "oil mist" system?
Is the carb jetting responsible for the hp output of 1.5?
could it be jetted bigger for a little more output?

The only way to do a simple test, to find the engine with the most power, is to put a prop on a sample of engines, and record which pulls this prop to the highest rpm. But this may not equate to the "best" heli engine.

I think the biggest problem will be if you can adapt the size and output shaft to the current crop of heli's available.

Also is it heavier or lighter...

After you know it will physically fit, then how will it perform? You'll need to determing the proper gear ratio to make us of it's power band.

I think it would be interesting to try it!

HI,
I,M CURRENTLY FLYING A LARGE ROBBE HUGHES 300 FUSELAGE KIT ON A MACHINE I CUSTOM BUILT. I'M USING THE GX31 SA2 ENGINE (HORIZONTAL ENGINE MOUNTED VERTICAL). THE OIL SPRAYER SYSTEM WORKS IN ANY ORIENTATION WITHOUT PROBLEMS. THE TA2 IS THE VERTICAL MODEL. THE DIFFERENCE IN THE SA2 AND TA2 IS CARBURETOR M/N AND THE INSTALLATION OF THE FUEL TANK.

MY MACHINE FLYS GREAT, IS VERY SMOOTH, VERY QUIET AND IS AN ABSOLUTE JOY TO FLY. THE POWER IS ADEQUATE TO FLY AT ABOUT 20 POUNDS.

CLICK ON "SEARCH" AT THE TOP OF THE PAGE AND TYPE IN "True 4 Stroke Heli". THERE IS DETAILED INFO ON THE R&D OF MY MACHINE, GEAR RATIOS, ENGINE WEIGHT REDUCTION, CARB JET MOD, ENGINE INFO, ETC.

Hi Gasman, I have been reading that post as you and John were talking about this engine. Do you have any pictures of the installation or modification to the engine?
I live in Calgary, and found an engine. Tthe exact model number is GX31 TC, and it is rated at 1.5 hp. The dealer has the tiller and a water pump using this engine. The water pump is on sale and would be cheaper to buy than the engine alone. The engine is not cheap, about $310.00 US, how much did you pay for yours?
How big is the gas tank and how much run time?

SORRY, I DIDN'T TAKE PICTURES DURING THE DEVELOPMENT OF MY MACHINE.

MY TANK SIZE IS 12 OUNCES, AND I ONLY FILL IT 1/2 TO 2/3 FULL
FOR FLYING TIMES OF 20 TO 25 MINUTES.

I PAID $240 TOTAL FOR MY ENGINE INCLUDING TAX.

I LIVE IN FLORIDA NEAR THE SPACE COAST AND PURCHASED FROM A LAWN MOWER DEALER IN ORLANDO.

THE REGIONAL TECH REP FOR HONDA RESIDES AT THE HONDA SUPPLY WAREHOUSE TWO BLOCKS AWAY FROM THE ABOVE DEALER. I DIDN'T KNOW THIS DURING THE TIME I WAS HAVING SO MUCH TROUBLE GETTING MY ENGINE UP TO POWER. HE LATER PROVIDED ME DATA ABOUT CARB MODELS ON THE DIFFERENT ENGINE MODELS, AND INFO ABOUT THE JET SIZE REDUCTION IN LATER PRODUCTION ENGINES. THIS WAS DONE TO REDUCE ENGINE EMISSIONS. I BELIEVE THIS SMALLER JETTING ALSO REDUCES POWER AS EVIDENT IN MY PERFORMANCE INCREASE AFTER REMOVAL OF THE JET REDUCTION BUSHING.

I AM NOT FAMILIAR WITH THE TC MODEL OF THE ENGINE. NONE OF THE DATA I HAVE SHOWS THE TC MODEL. THE ESSENTIAL MOD THAT FINALLY ALLOWED THE ENGINE TO DEVELOP FULL POWER WAS TO REMOVE A TINY ORFACED JET INSERT INSTALLED ADJACENT TO THE MAIN JET. DRILLING THE INSERT LARGER AND LARGER GAINED IMPROVED PERFORMANCE EACH TIME UNTIL FINALLY I JUST REMOVED THE INSERT. BINGO...SHE HAS BEEN RUNNING GREAT EVER SINCE.

Just a wild guess but I think ta and tc would refer as tamerica and tcanada. Our emission standards are a little different than the US standards. In any case, all the specs I saw are listing the output at 1.5 hp.
How wide is the frame where the engine is mounted?
Is the fan part of the flywheel? Did you keep the original fan system?

I BET YOU'RE RIGHT ABOUT THE TA AND TC DESIGNATORS, AND THAT IS WHY TC DOESN'T SHOW UP IN ANY OF THE INFO I HAVE. SINCE THE EMISSION SPECS ARE DIFFERENT IN CANADA, THE TC MAY NOT HAVE THE RESTRICTED CARB JET.
I FOUND THE TA WAS THE EARLIER ENGINE AND HAD LARGER JETTING WHILE THE TA2 HAD THE SMALLER RESTRICTED JETS.
YOU'LL HAVE TO INSTALL THE ENGINE, FLY IT AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS. REMOVAL OF THE JET REDUCTION BUSHING IS EASY AND NON DISTRUCTIVE TO TRY. SINCE THERE ARE SO MANY QUESTIONS ABOUT MODELS, CARBS AND POWER, YOU JUST HAVE TO GO FOR IT AND MAKE IT WORK.

I MOUNTED THE MECHANICS TO THE HEAD OF THE ENGINE AT THE TAIL BOOM END OF THE HELI AND TO THE CRANK CASE AT THE FRONT END OF THE HELI. THE SKIDS MOUNT TO THE BOTTOM OF THE ENGINE AT THE PULL STARTER MOUNT POINTS. THE ENGINE CASE IS VERY ADEQUATE AS A MAIN STRUCTURE AND SOME WEIGHT IS SAVED BY THIS SCHEME.
YOU NEED TO ACTUALLY HAVE THE ENGINE IN HAND TO DETERMINE HOW YOU WILL ADAPT IT TO YOUR MECHANICS. BECAUSE OF THE SHAPE OF THE CASE, IT WON'T MOUNT LIKE A GLOW OR G23, ETC.

YES THE COOLING FAN IS PART OF THE FLYWHEEL. YOU WANT TO RETAIN THE FLYWHEEL FOR BALANCE. I REMOVED THE PLASTIC/ALUMINUM COOLING SHROUD AND MADE MY OWN OUT OF LIGHT WEIGHT ALUMINUM SHEET (USED FOR ROOFING
CONSTRUCTION).

I DID FIND ONE WEB PAGE THET SHOWED SOME GX31 MODELS TO BE 1 HORSE POWER, BUT WHEN I TALKED TO THAT POWER EQUIPMENT DEALER ABOUT IT, HE SAID ALL GX31'S WERE 1.5 HP. HE DIDN'T KNOW WHY THEIR SITE SHOWED SPECIFIC MODELS TO BE 1 HP.
