Lost my job 3 weeks ago. I had a feeling it was going to happen. It wasn't a matter of if, it was just when it was going to happen. I started selling off my birds prior to unemployment, to fund another hobby but deep down I knew it was going to be for living expenses instead of a new toy fund. This &*$#ing economy sucks! Just when you think you are making progress, the bomb drops.
We will all survive this mess. What choice do we have? Ramen noodles aren't that bad. I am extremely thankful that my wife still has her job (healthcare) and that I live in a climate where I can go without turning on my furnace. Been thinkin' about finding a new career but after 30 years in construction, what does a guy do?
Still selling the remainder of my rc stuff and maybe if the economy ever turns for the better, I'll restock.
Best of luck to everyone out there in the same boat.

unions and lawyers.....comments please!!! The scourge of the universe.

Did you forget the reason the unions even got started??? It has nothing to do with the unions, it has everything to do with greed. Whether it be on the union side or the owner side, it is always the reason for failure. I am a Firefighter and we have a strong union. Ours is mostly for protection (making sure we have the right safety equipment for our jobs) but it also deals with wages. We don't ask for a "lot" we just want a fair wage for what we do and a safe place to work. Nationally we are in the bottom third for wages and benefits so I don't see our union as being a "bad" parasite.........Ron

Yes, when unions first started they were needed. The steel mills, coal mines, ETC. However, that's the biggest problem. What actually IS a fair wage and what the unions/members PERCEIVE as a fair wage tend to get out of hand very quickly.

Then it turns to, you as a laborer, STILL don't get your "fair" wage increase ETC but those union CEO scum still get their pockets lined every time your health insurance or anything goes down.

I have a very strong vendetta against unions and I forever will.

Regards, Brandon

See that would be the example of the "bad" union. Not all Unions are that way. I just hate it when people have a hate or vendetta against them while lumping them all in the same pot........Ron

I also don't like what Union's are doing to our economy and companies
They foster laziness and contempt.
All workers are treated equally (pay wise), this creates a poor work aptitude, "why should I work hard if my co-work is lazy and only does minimum work, and gets the same pay", or "I have my seniority I won't be layed off, so I don't have anything to prove"

Union personal do not tell the employees everything, and only tell them what they can get, regardless of the state of the company.

The Union members I met in the past, were ex-workers, with little or no financial or business education.

My wife worked for a union shop, for 15 years, when she was let go, the Union rep stated to a another Union rep, "We just lost more money"

The Unions Don't care about the company, they just care to keep themselves looking good, by making excesses, to protest their a$$.
example, the company is doing poorly dues to poor financial planning, and bad decisions, nothing to do with 3 months of vacation time, 20K in benefits per person, 20 sick days, 3 - 5% a year increases, while the economy is bad or poor sales.
Frankly, the only poor planning was giving into the Unions demands

What a lot of workers who do go on strike do not know what they are getting into

Example:
Worker makes $50,000 a year
that's $962.00 a week pay ( 25.64 /Hr for 37.5 Hr work week )

say they ask for 3% increase a year for 3 years
Year 1 = $ 51,500
Year 2 = $ 53,045
Year 3 = $ 54,636
3 year gained $9,181 less takes say 40% $5,508

Now if they go on strike
Week Lost total
1 $962.00
2 $1924.00
3 $2886.00
4 $3848.00
5 $4810.00
6 $5772.00

Not much of a gain now is it

Guess what you been on strike say for 6 weeks the Union pay pennies.
My friend lost his 2nd car, and took a line of credit after 3 years still paying it down.

Also for Ontario's

Labour disputes

If a strike, a lockout or other form of labour dispute where you work causes you to lose your job or prevents you from going to work, you will generally not be paid EI benefits. The following conditions apply whether you are a union member or not and whether your job is part or full-time.

You may, however, be eligible to receive benefits if:

* you are not taking part in the dispute;
* you are not giving money directly to support the dispute; and
* you are not directly interested in the dispute — i.e. your wages or working conditions, etc., are not affected by the outcome of the dispute.

If you are taking part in a labour dispute, you are not eligible for EI until :

*

the strike or lockout is over; or
*

you have found another regular job where you pay EI premiums.

http://www.servicecanada.gc.ca/eng/....shtml#eligible

What the Union does not want you labour's to know
basically means if you sign your Union labour card, your screwed.
If you don't means, you have a possible out.
"you are not taking part in the dispute;"

For other Unions they provide improved and safer work conditions, not going to fault them for this, and require praise.

But above an beyond they they are a hindrance to the economy and a poor excess for their existence.

A few examples of the union that was in marvel,,
1. There was a real pos that worked there 15 sum years. At first i didnt know no better and became friends with him..He was always sleeoing in his car before work and acted real strange..Some of his other friends told me he was sick...Well to make a long story short,,,We failed 3 drug test,,went to rehab 3 times and still the company wouldnt fire him cause of the contract the union had that protected such people..
2. One of the craziest attendance policy i have ever heard..On any given day out of 100 union employees that worked there, there would be 25 people off sick,,,another 30 out on the fmla leave act,,,
3. anytime someone got fired for attendance they could be gone 2 months or and the union would get there job back with back pay..
4. i seen a employee get fired and brought back 3 times in one week..
there is so many examples i could go on and on..

this all came down to the company shutting the doors and moving the company up north,,,
