I knew we was in trouble when the orginal owners of Northland,,,,sold out to a foreign company named AGA,,,,Indiana offered them so much to stay like building them a larger faciltiy,,,run a rail road into the plant,,,mortgage loans for their top people with no interest,,huge tax breaks and even free country club memberships,,,But we knew it was already in writing if AGA decided to shut a plant down it would be the one in Indiana..

Think long and hard about your family if you take that prison guard job. I've known a couple of guys that did it. You start thinking everyone is out to get you and your attitude reflects it.

Good luck! I'm thankful I still have my job.

I have been downsized twice in the last 18 months and am just trying to stay afloat. I am a software developer and there is nothing out there right now, at my level of experience we are only hired by a company when they are expanding. I have some software of my own in beta testing and will be on the market in under 90 days but that is going to have me down to $1.53 in my bank account. Good luck to all who are job hunting, good luck to all who may be job hunting soon, and for those still working put some money away. Oh, and watch for my product announcement.

Thinking career change or eligible for retraining, take a look

I am an adjunct professor at GLMA, retired at 52 from the industry with 34 years at sea.
I now have cadets from fresh out of high school, to military retirees, career changers, guys selling or loosing their businesses, DEA agents, post military cadets, females, males. 18-50 years of age in my various classes the past 3 years.
Most are now sailing either Lakes or Oceans, working rotations like
4 months on 4 months off and making anywhere from $60K to $110K.

If you are healthy, can get past a DMV check, don't use drugs and alcohol with offenses. This might be your ticket.

The first website will have much of the info and contact info you need. If you already have a degree the professional license part can be fast tracked in about 2 1/2 years to graduate.

I work in prison for a few a week hooking up TV and Satellite receivers. It was women minimum security. The stuff the guards have to deal with, it gotta be worst job, everyone complaining it was enough for me.

Hope you only hooked up the DISNEY CHANNEL and WEATHER CHANNEL. That is all Sheriff Arpaio gives them. Put the conns to work or in class to teach them reading, writing, arithmetic, citizenship, geography and a useful trade to put them back into society.

it is amazing to understand some of the thought processes within the union mentality

A union is a parasitic entity. A "good" parasite doesn't kill it's host. A "bad" parasite kills it's host then dies itself.

I've never heard of a 'good' parasite before, have you?

Really sorry about your job loss. I too got canned but was lucky that I was ready to retire anyway.
All these people are out of work but congress gave themselves a $4700 per month raise. And a petty cash of $93000. Gawd it makes me so f### mad.

I used to work for a company that built measuring equipment for the steel industry. I had four heavy brackets that needed welding in place so I could mount the equipment.
Well, what should have been a 2 hour job at the most took 2 days when the steel mill union finished. Needless to say that steel mill is out of business also. (Along with 1000 job loses)

prison guard interview update

well i had the interview today,,I thought i had it in the bag...They didnt even look at my resume..They told me up front if i answer there questions and score at least a 70% they would hire me....After i stepped out of the room i was feeling good...When they called me back in i looked on the paper and scored a 69%,,i couldnt beleive it,,,Here is the question I scored low on.

Say you need to clean up a spill and went to the supply closet and found 2 inmates having intercourse,,,What would you do to handle the situation..It caught me my total surprise...In my mind I said break them up but then i was thinkin should i go in a break up to people doing it..So I said call for back-up to defuse the situation....well what they wanted to hear waS separate and detain the inmates...They said since i score close to the cutoff they may call me back but if not I can reapply in a year....Thats my luck guys,,,,I dont know how many more lows I can take...With the proper training i am sure i would know exactly what to do....Just had to vent a bit..

Do you have any past experience dealing with security and the like? If not, I can't see how they would expect you to answer that question correctly. I'd assume it would depend on the size of the inmates and the situation. I wouldn't want to go in a break up Bubba and Gump weighing in at 300+ each without some back up!

Good luck. You'll find something, just keep your attitude positive!

There are a lot of very hard working union workers out there. They deserve good pay and a safe working environment. Unfortunately there are a lot of not so hard working union workers out there too that give unions a bad name. It's really a shame.

Having someone that can vouch for you is a huge advantage.

For a lot of companies your odds of getting in without a known valuable employee vouch for you is nearly nill. They take more chances on a hire not working out if they hire off the street.

Very best of luck to ya.
