Everyone's seen them , wires with that black stuff on them from being old . Has anyone had any luck removing the crud from the wire so it can be soldered to ?

You must be working with NiCad wires. It's not worth doing anything with except replacing the wires.

Believe it or not it'sd called Black Wire Disease

It's a old problem among any old positive multi strand fine copper wire.

Debate's have gone on for year's in the RC circles about the cause, but little solutions exisit except to keep cutting it back. Some think it's cause is fine stuff is not lacquered. Seem's like it's a oxidation.

I've seen some just powder in my hands.

Some times it's caused by using cleaning solutions with ammonia (windex).

Hard to accept that

I've found it on many of my "OLD" FN TX packs and on some batteries that have been buried deep in foam and then covered in a baggie deep inside the fuses of some of my antique aircraft.

Where talking G series stuff and older. Can't imagine ever taking the back off one of my TX's or shooting a shot of Windex down into the fuse.

It's got some thing to do with the conductance of the current or polarity as it travels. I've even seen it on stuff as big #10 & 8 gauge in large windings and such.

Black Wire Disease is prevalent on NiCad battery and switches. I used to toss them at the first appearance on the battery and change the switch after 2 seasons. That's overkill, but that's what I did.
