...but can you just stick a washer each side and bolt it straight to the top of the taper?...

NO!!!! If I'm not mistaken,, Hanson sells a prop adapter at very little cost, But don't hold me to that, it's be some time sence I've been to his web site, or talked to Al, but the prop is not a bad idea, I just like breaking it in flying, I'll spend a few minutes or so, setting needles, close from the start, then go fly,, I do a first tank of starting let it idle and warm up, shut down till it cools off completly, then do it again, second tank, go fly, nice and easy curcits, with a occasional full throttle climb, for a few seconds, to load the engine, till the first gallon is gone, after that it's flying normal, That's how I roll... My motor came with a prop hub on it i think i might bolt mine to a stand with a prop and run a few gallons thru it. I've already ran over two gallons thru it before i sent it to Hanson but i think i have to start the break in again now that i had it worked on. If i bolt a prop on and tune the motor for best running will it run the same when i bolt it back in the heli with out having to adjust the needles? I know for a fact i can tune a gas airplane motor i have done it many times its the motor in the heli i'm having problems with. I have a airplane tach what should i tach it at with a prop on it? I would love to tune it on the bench if it would work out? Let me know if anyone knows. I have converted chainsaw engines and tuned them on the bench and they all ran great. But when the motor is mounted i have problems.Let me know what you guys think?

Thanks for any info

How I'm breaking in a new engine

Lawnboy ashless 8oz can mixed in with 2 gallons of fuel.

First flight stay in normal mode, 1550 head speed. Fly low and slow for 2 minutes, land for 30 seconds to cooldown, repeat for the rest of the 15 minute flight. Can fly forwards or backwards or pirouette basically do something to enjoy other than hover. Really don't hover as that is harder on the engine than forward flight anyways.

2nd flight, more of the same, some climbouts (very slow rise no full throttle) and once high enough shoot autos to cool engine down.

3rd flight I started going into idle up 1 and flying inverted with rolls, loops and split-s's. All there maneuvers are not much load on the engine, it actually unloads when you split's out for example. Keep the power light on the first half of the loop. Every 2 to 3 minutes, shoot an aerobatic auto to cool the engine down, wait at the bottom of the auto for full stop of blades before taking off again.

As you progress in flights, put a little more load on the engine here and there but stay away from sustained full power climbouts at least until after the first hour of flight. Tonight in the last tank (7th flight) I started doing some full power climbouts and at this point I'm onto normal flying just about.

I'll fly the rest of the 2 gallons and then switch it to Amsoil at 3.5oz per gallon. Will take a couple of tanks there for it to settle in and then it should be good to go.

I don't shut it down to cool off, just land and idle it for a little while. When I first started out I put a tuned carb on it from the previous motor. It kicked and looked like it was rich with extra smoke, but towards the end of the day today I noticed it smoothed out alot and the smoke is mostly gone by itself. I didn't touch the needles and now they seem to be just right so I'm going to leave them alone.

While you could bolt the engine on a stand and put a prop hub on it (zenoah makes those for airplane motors which are basically heli motors with prop hubs on them and a different grey coil for timing change), its not so hard to break in a motor right on the heli. If you guys want that "pre-done" send me your new motor and we can work out a deal that is worth it for the both of us for me to keep breaking in motors

Mine has the gray coil off a airplane motor but Hanson said it still should run good.He said the heli coil was about $70 so for now i'm going to run the airplanes coil and when i get up some money i will change it out. Does any one have a heli coil for a good price?

Thanks

Oh man

The worms are slowly creeping out of the can one by one. First it was an ignition motor, then it became a married motor with another, and now its got a grey coil...The grey coil has different timing most likely for hand propping but who knows how smooth or not will it run with that. Whatever problems you've had with the Spectra I have to discount as very possible due to sub-standard equipment for lack of better words.

I have a couple of red coils that are bad. I need to send them to Horizon for service. If they come back replaced then I'll be able to send you a coil if you want. I would rather see you do that than put in the motor with the grey coil to give yourself the best chance of success.

Wait I have a red coil from Hanson with the black lead cut off. I can send you that as you won't need it as you're using the stator gator. Want that?

Yes i do Raja and thanks for the offer. When i bought the motor from QWW i thought it was a heli motor i did not know any different it was only after i got the motor and read on here that it was the wrong motor. The guy that sold it to me knew i was putting it in a heli,i did wonder why it came with a prop hub. If i where not low on money right now i would buy another motor but this time i would buy it from Hanson. I have to try and make due now. I did not do enuff research on gassers before i jumped into it so if theres anything i can tell some one out there that is do alot of research. I've been working on my gyro a Spartan that i put on my heli for a week or so trying to get the firmware downloaded in the right spot and so far i still have not been able to get it to work.

Thanks for all the info guys

You got it

I'm on my way to CT tonight to go to the Delaware funfly. I'm going to take a red coil with me and I'll send it to you tomorrow from there no charge before I continue on to Delaware. I feel bad for your arm I hope that all works out and take this as a gift from me to help out.

I have to leave soon so please PM me your address and I'll pick it up later tonight and get it boxed up for tomorrow morning shipment.
