I'm probably going to pick up the liquid-powered Aurora, but I thought I'd make a comment on the upcoming e-Aurora.

Is anyone else a little turned-off by the battery placement? I fail to see how it is possible they were unable to design this heli in a way that allowed them to place the batteries in the same position on opposite sides of the frame.

Maybe it has no noticeable effect on performance. Maybe it has none at all. I just find it to be simply bizarre that someone would find this an acceptable setup.

I understand that not all things are symmetrical on an R/C heli, but they are usually servos and bell-cranks--items that contribute very little weight. Not batteries!

With some of the newer heavier 6s packs the CG was thrown off a little.
The new battery placement allows for better CG.

Hmmm... I don't know about that Darkspire.

It appears as though the batter on the left side of the heli is mounted higher up and more forward than the right-side battery.

If the CG was too far forward, you'd think they'd mount both batteries near the main-shaft. If the CG was too low, you'd think they'd mount both batteries closer to the main rotor.

I can't see why they had to (much less, chose to) mount the batteries asymmetrically.

With the placement of the motor, there was no way that the upper left side battery could of been moved further back. Which is why the lower right side battery has the ability to adjust its placement further forward and further backward in the frame for different battery types.

The staggered battery placement keeps the sleek frames, and allows for the use of the same nitro canopy on the E. Flight performance is not noticeable with the staggered placement, it flies extremely well. It has the same flight characteristics as its nitro brother, smooth, yet crisp and quick.

Jason, I'm a little confused here.

Isn't the motor placed smack-dab in the middle of the frame? Why would its placement affect one battery more than the other?

Looking at the photos, there seems to be nothing different between the right and left sides of the frame other than servo placement. And even these are very similar.

Unless I'm missing something, I see absolutely no reason why the right-side battery couldn't be placed as high (or almost as high) as the left-side battery.

Remove the receiver from its current position, place the right-side battery where the receiver was, and put the receiver where the battery was.

Am I missing something here?

Have you looked at the updated pictures, on the mainpage of the AvantRC page as the packs are now moved as far as I can tell they are side to side under the motor.

No, they're not side by side

Aside from a slim profile, one of the advantages of having one battery above the other is getting the CoG as close to rotorhead as possible.

True CoG is often overlooked and is not to be mistaken with fore & aft balance.

By getting the CoG up towards the rotor head, you are thereby minimizing the helicopters mass moment of inertia on all axes.

(I think I worded that correctly)

3 years is enough time wasted. Taking a break for a while.

Aha, was the RX pack I saw

Anyway, moving the other pack infront where the left pack is, aint gonna work due to CoG wont be good, better to have them as close to the mainshaft as possible, well, as much as it can be.

I have my conversion made so both packs sits under the mainshaft, but then I get lower CoG as well as "fat" layout, i.e. not as slim as stock.

Im totally Ok with this layout you presented with those pictures.

I think it's a good looking set up.
It beats the Align set up as using the lipos as a front bumper.lol...

My only concern with the "new" arrangement (with the larger battery hole on the bottom) is that the piece of CF which goes between the battery and the motor, and the battery and the ESC hole (on the right frame) is very, very thin, Does anyone else notice this? Looks like it is only about 2mm and will crack easily. The previous version (with the smaller battery hole on the bottom) didn't have this issue.

@ Bonkers: Do you think it would be better if the "hole" for each battery was open on both frames so that one battery didn't stick out to the left and one battery stick out to the right? Is that your concern?

Jrock,

I don't have any 'concerns' per se. Rather, I'm simply wondering why battery placement is not symmetric.

No one has provided an answer to that question.

The center-of-gravity explanation isn't a good one because moving both batteries upward and backward toward the main-shaft would help the center-of-gravity. Not just one battery.

I cannot see any benefit to not having the batteries in the same position on both frames. There's plenty of space to place the batteries symmetrically.

I can't see why they don't just sit between the frames by cutting the other side out and put the electronics on a plate like the nitro. Although doing this would mean doing something about that thin piece of CF between motor and battery as JROCK said. May be a simple bridging piece inside or outside of the frames?

If you cut a "hole" all the way through to the other side, how would you hold the battery in place?

Just a suggestion, obviously it would then need a plate to sit on with velcro strap, much like any other E heli. In this particular case, cutting the holes would make the frames extremely weak so not an option with this design.

I am really surprised there is not a production 90 size with a layout similar to Heli Chris TREX 700E frames

Duke you kinda hit the nail on the head.. Bokers it's still a conversion of sorts.. A purpose built E Heli Would have the packs in a CG neutral position. IMO...
And not have the motor positioned where the batteries need to be..

I kind of like the battery location. I especially like how Augusto seems to be trying to keep the weight higher up on the helicopter (i.e. less moment of inertia). This will make for a faster roll rate no doubt.

Realistically, how much more will the batteries contribute to imbalance compared to a nitro muffler hanging off the side?

I personally like the layout of the batteries and frame design of this heli. I'm planning on buying one when they come out.
