Gasser Model RC Helicopters > Tail Kick after engine warms up

I bought my MinAir 1005 used (and it seems to be pretty well built)

The motor is the PUH230

I put in a JR921 and a Regulator, Lipo etc - fixed a few minor things and have had about 15 flights on it - generally happy with it.

After the engine warms up - it kicks (like it was 4 stroking) about every 15 secs or so.

I replaced the older JR Gyro with a 401 and moved it closer to the shaft.
It has a Futaba 9204 connected for the tail.

I used Raja's great instructions to set up the GV-1 (with a gator) and that's working fine. (in normal, st1 and st2)

Ive tuned it leaner so its four stroking less. Head temps are at 200 or below.

But the tail still kicks (worse than before).

From what I can tell the motor was never started until it got it - and it starts and runs well.

Im running a 35:1 mix on good quality Stihl (chainsaw oil)

Any other suggestions before I invest in a Spartan Gyro and replace the tail servo?

The canopy is shaking a bit - so there is also some vibration somewhere - not sure if its enough to affect the gyro.

thanks

You might still be a tad rich

See what the plug looks like as a reference.

it sounds like you need to change out the tail servo and or lean it out a little. 200 on the fin isnt hot enough, plus you mentioned that the engine is new so you have not even broken it yet, so its supposed to be way hotter than 200. Im not sure about the 230, but when i was breaking in my g26 motor temps were around 230 - 245. Hope it helps.

if im not blade bogging youll find me pack puffing

This is normal when breaking in the engine, You want to hear, or see the burble for the first gallon,

Check your plug, What does it look like??
it will tell you everything you need to know,,

What Head Speed are you flying it at, does it get better in Idle up 1 or 2?? Please, we need more info... XGM/VGM

before I leaned it out (a bit) - the plug was pretty black - and a bit of carbon (so yea it was rich) - Ill take it out and check it again.

running better leaner - not much different at higher rpms.

I'm running 1550, 1650, 1750

thanks - I did wonder if with a new motor this is somewhat normal (still only have about 1/2 gallon thru it)

The chances are that will be fully synthetic so you have another Gal at least to run before the motor shows signs of breaking in.

I only like to fly gassed up

If the plug is black you might be running too much oil. verify the proper gas oil ratio.

Belay all other worries, its your tail servo

Here are the specs for that servo:

torque 131.9 oz-in (9.5 kg-cm), speed 0.19s

See anything wrong? You need a FAST servo for the tail. 0.19 is a standard speed servo and no matter what you do the tail is going to kick around because the servo is too slow for the closed loop system.

Change the servo to a Futaba 9254 or some other better fast servo (I don't like 9254's in gassers) with a speed of at least 0.10. Usually tail servo speeds vary from 0.06 to 0.10.

I had my 9254 fail on my Predator gasser. Nothing will put a lump in your throat faster than having a tail servo fail on a fast flyby. I now use a Futaba 9350 servo. I dont fly 3-d but give me some open space and I give it the "Jefferson G-Force test" this servo has served me well and going to put one on my Spectra G.

Futaba 9350 Digital servo
Speed: .15 sec/60° @ 4.8V
.12 sec/60° @ 6V
Torque: 111 oz-in (8.0 kg/cm) @ 4.8V
139 oz-in (10.0 kg/cm) @ 6V

thanks - going for an HS-6965HB - (there are several threads on RR that mention this as suitable for a gasser - 100oz and 0.08)

will report results

yea - the new tail servo fixed it

the other thing is I think I was running it too lean (which actually made the kick worse) - backed out closer to 1.5 on the high and overall seems much happier

now just have to figure out why the gov keeps shutting down

thanks all
